    help! internet issues

Don't know if this is a virus or something to do with my internet provider.

I can't get on any websites apart from HUKD and Google. Everything else is saying connection problems. The internet status states local and internet so that looks ok...

    Anyone have any ideas??

It could be a DNS problem.. Can you get to http///w…com if not, how about 205.186.184.66 ?

Both should show the same page - but the first requires your DNS to be working, and the second doesn't - the reason hotukdeals and google are working is because you visit them often and their DNS result is cached (stored temporarily)

Yeah I can get on the second one.

    Whats a DNS problem?

Okay - that means your ISP's DNS servers aren't working.

DNS translates easy to remember names of websites to their technical IP, or internet address.

If you've tried restarting your computer, try restarting your router or modem (just unplug it and plug it back in) and see if that helps, otherwise you can contact your ISP about it.

Be warned though - restarting your computer or modem could possibly mean it'll forget google and hotukdeals too, so you wouldn't be able to get back here.

An alternative is to switch to using opendns for your dns (which i do!) but that isn't something thats incredibly simple to do.. It depends if you're confident enough to change settings on your computer - 208.69.38.160/start will give you information on how to do it if you feel brave

Many Thanks for your help. I have tried restarting comp made no difference. I'll look at your link and see if I can figure it out if not i'll risk swiching off modem.

    Thanks again!

No worries! Hope it helps - obviously calling you ISP is an option, but i know how painful that experience usually is.. hence why i use opendns, you don't have to worry

download from another computer or yours if it allows/ run malwarebytes and scan for dns hijack . If you got one it will find it and fix it.

BTW the first Link will never work ///

Not too sure what you mean - i used that to diagnose that it was a DNS problem. The first link will work if DNS was working

Edit: Oh, i see.. I typoed a third slash. In safari, chrome and firefox at least, it still works :P - and actually, hotukdeals made the link http:/ - which works in IE, too

^yeah link had extra / in link eg http/// which will not work in IE8

My son always tells me to check sites out at downforeveryoneorjustme.com if I say they are not working.

But that doesn't help if you can't get there :-(

(off the top of my head)

control panel -> network -> double click on your lan adapter -> properties -> tcp/ip

change primary dns server to 208.67.220.220
    secondary to 208.67.222.222

should switch you to open dns.

sorry i cant be more precise, that's just from memory and i'm on my mac. the dns server addresses are definitley right however.

Yay all working fine now - I did the DNS open thing nothing changed. So I shut down and unplugged modem for a hour. And all working so could be the unplugging modem or the DNS thing.

But thanks everyone for your help!

this was exactly what you should have done in the first place. Happens to most of us and it isnt risky to unplug it:-D.

BTW, 1 minute unplugged would have sufficed! :w00t:

resetting your modem is always the first thing you should try. The HUKD pages you were viewing were stored on your PC anyway so you could still view them even with your modem off! :?

Had that not been done already :lol seems not was only the computer
