why do you need to buy office

the model i pointed out doesn;t come with microsoft office which has the programme word in it - without word it's reasonably hard to do essays which are quite essential at uni!

Most users pay a lot of money for Microsoft Office and only use about 5% of the function.

So he is saying no need to give Microsoft money when there are perfectly good word processors and office suites out there.

Open Office for example is completely free and includes a word procesor.

I would not get too hung up on the internal specs of a computer.

Any computer you buy nowadays will be perfectly OK for doing office work.

In general terms (very general) the more you pay for a PC the faster the CPU / the larger the hard disk the PC will have.

If you are going to university I would wait and see what deals they have there, most unis have deals with PC companies for computers.

The RAM (Random Access Memory) is the stuff the computer uses to run software programs. It used to always come as megabytes (e.g 512mb) but usually now is gigibytes (1 or 2 GB).

The hard drive is where all your files and documents will be stored and is also measured in GB.

How much you need of either depends on what you will use the computer for, but the more, the better. If you will want to store video, for example, you'll need more hard drive space than if you will only be saving Office-type documents.

The processor is measured in gigahertz (GHz) - again, used to be slower, in megahertz (MHz). Dual core is better (it's like having two processors instead of one).

Personally I would wait until you get to uni go to the computer labs go to www.apple.com and buy an iMac / MacBook / MacBookPro with higher education discount.
