Is it possible to use a IDE cd drive with a 3.5" hard drive enclosure. ( use the ide and power from the case)

This is a PC right ?? .If it is , open up the sides of the PC and look at the motherboard .It should have a least one IDE socket , most have two but are being phased out for SATA connections. The IDE cable will be on the board [IDE1] and plugged in to the hard drive. There will be an available plug for another IDE device ,namely a CD/DVD drive [or combo] This is the one to use to attach your CD drive , with the power from an available 4 wire plug in the case.Boot up into the BIOS and change the settings to BOOT from CD [first],Hard drive second,Save and exit . Your PC should boot up and find the CD , follow the instructions and format your drive in NTFS ,then it will load Windows .Remember ,a format will lose all your data.

Not sure if a CD drive works of the 3.5" adapters but don't see why it shouldn't provided the power is available and the motherboards bios recognises it as a bootable CD drive. It might be easier to boot from USB stick or something though?

I have installed the xp, I have a samsung drivers disc though to get the screen and wifi working ect. i wanna know wether a external hdd case will work with a cd drive

Ah , right . I've just checked a few sites and now know what they are . I've also checked out the Samsung site and naturally theres a fair bit of info regarding these including drivers and firmware to download .I wonder if you can use a USB CD/DVD plugged in and boot from this .Check out the BIOS to find out what you can actually boot from.Maybe you can transfer the Os to a large pen/flash drive and boot from this ,without the need for a CD .

Wouldn't buy one just for the purpose but doubt it would do any harm to try if you already had one, but as mentioned would it not be easier to use a usb pen drive (or memory card reader etc etc) to transfer the drivers?
