help! my boiler is broken!

hi, my Worcester 28i boiler is not giving me hot water or central heating. The pressure seems very low - does anyone know if this is the problem? And if so (or not) what I can do? I am starting to panic as it will cost £200 to call someone out! any help appreciated! thank you.

I take it that is a combi boiler, sounds a familiar model. What happens when you turn the hot tap on? Does the boiler fire up at all? I've had low pressure and my boiler still served up hot water.

By the way I'm no plumber but I have fixed my old combi in the past before getting it replaced.

Hi
We had the same problem a month or two ago, try raising the pressure on the boiler, to do this, go to where your boiler is, there should be a black knob, turn this towards you or away from you until the pressure reaches 1.5 or 2. Hope this helps. Try reseting the boiler also.

+1.
On ours, we need to turn a screw to open the valve for a few seconds to increase the pressure, and then close it off.... Whoever installed it in our house (before we were there) did a cr*p job, cos they put the valve under the kitchen counter top behind where the washing machine goes!! Have to drag out the washing machine whenever the pressure needs adjusting

There should be a flexable tube attached to the boiler with a small valve attached turn this valve untill correct pressure is achieved.

British gas have a fixed price 'fix' and you don't have to be a customer of theirs. But a local plumber might be able to give you a quote - it might turn out to be something really simple.

how do i reset the boiler?

On the front of the boiler where you adjust the water & heat temp, there should be another knob to turn it off & on, turn the boiler off for about 10 seconds, then turn it back on & fire the boiler up.

At th bottom of the boiler, where your pipes are going into the boiler usually over to the right, that's where the knob should be to raise ur pressure.

I think you need to have a working boiler to be able to sign up to it. You cannot wait until it breaks down.

This sounds a pressure problem what pressure is reading on the boiler gauge?

Supermod

Pressure needs to be between 1.5 and 2. As stated above.

pressure is definitely too low, i am completely out of depth trying to fix this! any of you lovely helpful people live in york???

Is that a Greenstar 28i junior boiler? If so this is how you up the pressure...

Underneath the boiler should be a plastic cover, take this off and there should be a key on the otherside clipped in place, take that out and look underneath the boiler. There will be a square white plastic knob and a tube with a padlock symbol on (locked and unlocked) next to it. The key goes in the tube, make sure its all the way in and turn it so its at the unlock padlock symbol. Then use something to turn the square white plastic knob and you should hear water going into the boiler.

Might take a few seconds for the pressure bar to go up.

When you get a chance, bleed the radiators in the house as that will help keep the pressure up.

Edit: Don't forget to turn the knob back and take the key out! When you take the key out there will be a bit of water that spills out with it - that's normal apparently.

Was just about to look for that. We used that last month when our boiler packed in. They even came out the same day aswell.

What does the pressure gauge say ?

You keep saying its too low without saying what it is ?

sorry, pressure is on 0 bars (grey arrow) and 1.25 (red arrow)

Seriously, follow me instructions - it's very easy to do.

i dont think it is a junior, it is a worcester 28i RSF combi

Mine has a filling loop underneath the boiler where the pipes are with a black knob on it,i have to turn it anti-clockwise to raise the pressure.

Hiya. When you say the pressure is too low do you mean on the guage on the front of the boiler or the water coming out the tap? If you mean the guage then don't worry too much about that at the moment. If you mean the pressure coming out the tap then can you confirm something for me......is the pressure low coming out the cold tap too??, if it is then there's a problem in the water companies mains, not your boiler, phone the water board up and see if there are any bursts that might be affecting your area, if there are then wait till that is repaired before you do anything else

If it's not the water mains, is there a red light flashing on the front panel?, if so press the round red button for 10 seconds and let it go, the boiler should fire up.

pressure is on 0 bars (grey arrow) and 1.25 (red arrow). the water is coming out fine in terms of pressure...just really cold!

red light is on and boiler fires up, just no hot water or heating

Here's a link to the instruction booklet for this boiler, have a look through that see if it sheds any light on things

Does the boiler stay firing up or does it cut out after a while? Is there any water coming out any of the pipes outside the house near the boiler?

If either is yes I reckon you'll need to get someone in.

As telboy-007 suggested - you need to locate the filling loop on your boiler. You need to get water into your system for the boiler to function. You should find your boiler manual and find out where the filling loop is - and follow the instructions on how to get water into the system.

Link to manual here, I think this type of combi does not have a filling loop?, I think it has the plastic key that is inserted underneath

Not useless :-D I bet there's stuff you know about that other folk don't too, so you might be able to help someone in return. I would seriously have a look through the instructions and see if there's sommat in there that helps, you'll be in the best position to do it........stood in front of the boiler :-D

Good luck

phone the helpline for the boiler they have a good team and will give you advice over the phone

perhaps you could ask a neighbour to assist you in finding the filling loop or the means to fill the system with water?

is there a white key under the boiler if so use this to fill the pressure

look for the filling loop... on mine it looks like this....
