HELP! My computer has died :(

I can't get my computer to start... it keeps coming up with USB DEVICE OVER CURRENT DETECTED...and it states it will turn off in 15 seconds.

I have an ASUS, what do I need to do? I have vacuumed inside the case and unplugged everything apart from the monitor but still no joy.
A friend has suggested I buy a new Power Supply?

Like a fool, I haven't backed up any data for a few months

have you updated bios

is it a custom build
or contat asus asus.co.uk/sup…rt/

Something from a similar problem on Google..

Check all USB jumpers

I just assembled a system with a ASUS P5K-VM board, and when I first booted it, I got the "USB Device Over Current Status Detected !!" error. After 2.5 hours of trying everything, I noticed a blue jumper lying in the box the board came in. The jumper was used to select if the USB-port is on when the PC is off. When I connected the jumper, the system worked.

It's the USB controller on the Asus motherboard, it's quite a common issue. (providing you haven't messed with anything since it last worked)

1) Unplug all USB connections to the PC

See if that works, if not.

2) Unplug all USB connects to the motherboard (e.g: Make sure the front I/O is not connected to the USB1 / USB2 etc on the motherboard.

See if that works, if not.

3) Turn off onboard USB support in the BIOS

If that works, grab a cheap USB PCI card in order to use your PC and connect USB devices (such as mouse, keyboard etc).

It's going to need a new motherboard whatever happens, a USB PCI card is just a cheaper way to fix the problem if you can't afford one.

i can't seem to get into BIOS, I've had this PC running fine for about 3 years?
I'm not a techie with computers, I will have a go with your suggestions, thanks

If I were you I would backup now using a second computer and a USB/IDE/DATA convertor which looks a bit like this:

(You temporarily disconnect your hard drives power & data connectors and hook up the convertor power & data. USB goes to second computer. Your computer stays off throughout all this & second computer can see your hard drive via USB).

These convertors are available on aBay for around £8 - but make sure its a complete unit that includes all cables & the the power brick).

thanks all, I've managed to get it up and running by disconnecting the USB connects direct from the motherboard and have now backed up all important data. The wireless keyboard and mouse doesn't seem to work anymore but it was the connection to the front USB's that was at fault... Phew !

Probably a bent or damaged front port. They can easily get damaged if bent or pushed a little too hard.

keyboard and mouse now working after further reboot

You shouldnt vacuum the case with parts still inside, the static energy can cause damage

Who's your daddy.

Try connecting the front I/O USB connector to one of the other USB motherboard ports, you normally have USB1 USB2 and USB3 depending on your board. If it's very low end, you may only have one.

If it works, you've narrowed it down to that particular USB connector on the motherboard.

If it doesnt, it's either the USB I/O ports themselves causing the issue or the USB controller as a whole has gone.

When I first built a computer, I plugged the front USB connectors into the motherboard incorrectly (put + plug on the - and the - on the +).. killed the USB drive which I subsequently plugged in.

Maybe you did the same? However, most front USB ports now have a plug which has all the jumpers in a group. Mine were all individual (+, -, GND, etc...)
