    help! my sons D.S is broken :(

    :-D :-D Can anyone help,

    My sons DS wont go no further than the health and safety warning, its fully charged, and he says hes not dropped it ect, but he's 9 so who knows how many knocks it could of had.

    is it worth getting it seen to?

    Is there any hope or is it knackered? :-(

    Does it have a reset button?
    If not can you remove the batteries for a few hours?

    thanks Dino, it has a 1.6 w rechargeable battery,under a screwed in compartment,i wonder if it is it ok to remove that?

    Not sure lou, you may invalidate the warranty if you open it!

    Yes ive tried other games , hes had it since june last year,how long is their life expectancy i wonder? its dissapointing, esp as his xmas presents were games for it :(,

    Under Uk law even if it were out of warranty but was within a decent life expectany you would be covered.

    Since June, that means you are well and truly covered, even without a receipt. If it's a genuine fault with the system and the outer casing does not show any signs of a good old battering give Nintendo a call, they will sort you out.

    thats great, i'll try, it has a couple of minor scratches through wear and tear, i think as its 7 months old and used bu a 9 year old i think its in good condition :thumbsup:

    Would you be able to leave it on to drain the batteries completely?
    I'm thinking of a re-boot type fix.

    i've bought every single Nintendo console since the NES (so all of them ) but my gf's son encountered a problem when we went on a trip and his DS was inside his DS carrycase, which was also inside his backpack full of soft items.
    Unfortunately, when he attempted to play it, the LCD screen had a huge crack inside the screan, causing leakage covering most of the screen, making it impossible to use the top screen.

    After i called Nintendo and informed them that it was within the 1 year warranty, they told us it's not covered by the warranty and if we want it to be replenished, we will have to shell out £58 plus send it to them by special delivery.

    I was very annoyed to hear this, considering the handheld was within it's warranty date and i've personally spent near £20,000 on Nintendo products over the years and they didn't care, despite being inside a carrycase designed to protect it.
    The DS was always very well looked after and practically in perfect condition and we couldn't see any signs of damage from any kind of impact.

    Due to this, we sold it on Ebay and replaced it with a DS lite for an extra £60 including a game, despite the screens condition but you'd be surprised how many people will buy a faulty DS and be able to restore it, so if you can't resolve the problem, bare in mind you can always sell it on ebay for a decent price as long as you fully notify them of the problem in the auctions contents and even the title.

    I think Nintendo will help you in this circumstance, as it sounds like a technical fault, which won't cost them any money to replace screens and their engineers will probably be able to fix it with ease.

    Good luck mate and i hope your son isn't as disappointed as my gf's son originally was.

    I think Nintendo products are covered with a '2 year' garantee - that is what was on my GBA SP.

    Nintendo are really good with looking after their customers (as are Microsoft, unlike Sony). They will probably fix the problem anyway.

    lou my sons ds wouldn't charge gave them a call and they said to send it off and within 2 weeks they gave him a brand new ds .nintendo are very good i also had probs with a ps2 and sony were just as good came and collected it and dropped off another one .
    i think they ask you just to send ds no charger etc

    Hi again Loupomm.

    Right firstly there is no reset button on the DS.

    Apparently the health and safety screen can freeze sometimes but this usually happens when games are inserted or ejected while on that screen. It also happens sometimes when the game corrupts.
    The normal remedy is to just power off and on or in the case of a corrupted game turn off and insert a different game.

    Just to check that he has tried the following:
    Touched the bottom screen at the health and safety warning.
    Pressed any button other than the power button.
    Checked that the battery is ok and there is no red light showing bottom right of the screen.


    As Steve first suggested one remedy may be to take the battery out and leave for about 10 minutes then put the battery back in.
    The batteries are simple to take out but you will need a very small "phillips" or 4 headed screwdriver, the type you use for spectacles repairs etc.
    Open the cover on the back and you will see the battery housed in the case. Take the battery out by locating the little clip which is on the left hand side of the writing just under the R of rechargable and B of Batterie.

    Put the battery back in after 10 mins or so and then boot it up as normal.

    Hopefully this will get it back to normal.

    If not we can't think of anything else here other than to send it back to Nintendo.
    If you need any further assistance please just shout. We are both around at the moment.

    Thank you for the advice, ive removed the battery, we are going to have tea then put it back in and have borrowed a new game to try to rule out our games being faulty as 2 of them were second hand, all that failing i will call nintendo :thumbsup: , will keep you posted

    Soft reset is L+R+Start+Select, there is no hard reset other than taking the battery out. I have high hopes for the battery removal sorting the problem out.
