Help Needed. £500 To Spend On Desktop!

    Hi Guys,

I've never posted anything like this before but here it goes.

Basically im looking to find a Desktop only PC with good specs for about £500

Ive been playing around on the Dell Website for ages and the best build i could get on their home website was the following:

    Quad Core 6600
    Vista Premium + SP1
    4GB Ram
    500GB HD
256mb HD 2600 XT Gfx Card
    DVD+/- RW + CD/DVD drive
    Wireless PCI Card

Does this build warrant the £500 price tag? Can it be built by another company for cheaper elsewhere?

Oh and for an extra £60 built one with a blu-ray dvd player in but the gfx card was a 256MB HD 3650.

Please let me know what you guys think.

    Thanks in advance

That spec isn't worth £500, you would get better value getting a system built at a local PC retailer,
you could get something like this ]http//ww…783 and have £100 to get a more powerful graphics card

For general use one doesn't need a quad......you could get a suitable dual core system for well under that price.

Of course you could always build your own.

    I agree,

    Steve

It all depends what you are going to do with it.

If all your are doing is web surfing and email and listening to a bit of music that spec is way over the top.

On the other hand if you are playing the latest games or maybe video editing then that spec is more like what you need.

For example Dell were doing a system unit for £162 a week or so back (no monitor just system unit) that would be fine for anyone doing basic home stuff.

After all, if you were buying a car, and all you were doing was going to the shops you would not buy a Porche, on the other hand if you wanted to go racing you would not buy a Fiat Punto.

have a look at this … have a look at this onehttp://www.laskys.com/pcs_and_laptops/pcs_and_apple_desktops/pcs/hp_pavillian_a6442.html?cm_mmc=Affil-_-Pcs_And_Laptops-_-Pcs-_-447900_HP_Pavillian_A6442&refid=affil&referred_site=ba?referred_site=ba&refid=affil ?

They cannot even spell Pavillion !!

This PC does not seem to come with a monitor, and I think the graphics are on-board (ie no separate graphics card)

So £500 is a lot if it has no monitor and no graphics card.

I got a quad core from these lot, the graphics needed looking at and upgraded the ram to 1066mhz, but overall quite pleased

    Dell outlet all the way!
    I got :
    Dell XPS 420
    C2D E8400 @ 3GHz
    3GB DDR2 RAM
    Nvidia 8800GT 512MB
    Vista Home Premium 32-bit
    For £484!

keeping my eye on this, but would want a decent monitor too, i like the ones with the stylish glass screens....

Thanks for the replies guys...keep em coming.

Done a bit more research on the dell business site this time and got this build for a Vostro 200 for £515 Delivered

    Quad Core 9300
    Vista Premium
    4GB Ram
    500GB Hard Drive
    512mb 8800 GT GFX Card
    Wireless PCI Card

Any better than the one i previously posted. Oh and btw, its for my cousin...he's abit of a show off so wants the best top spec PC for that price range. He is a casual gamer and multitasks alot...for example..likes to have Sopcast open whilst surfing the web and burning a DVD all at the same time...so need a processor that will handle that sort of thing.

That's got a better processor and a better graphics card than your last ones, from the specs you've posted it doesn't seem to have any downsides either.

p.s. The 3650 is better than the 2600XT isn't it?

Great choice on the pc btw have something very similar from dell and its excellent one tiny question is Vista Premium 32bit or 64bit as 32bit won't use all your 4gb (Learned this the hard way)
