I think its a warning light for the anti polution system

Original Poster

it says in the book, "Warning light for monitoring exhaust gas"

what could that mean

If that light stays on then it's a engine management warning and will be telling you there is a problem with the injectors.

At least that's what it was on the older ones i think.

Either that or it's telling you the ejector seats knackered. :giggle:

Engine warning light

http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/Images/eng_man_light_72.jpg

Illuminates when the ignition is switched on. It should extinguish as soon as the engine starts.

If it illuminates with the engine running, it indicates a malfunction with the engine management system. Have this checked as soon as possible.

If it flashes when driving, reduce the vehicle speed immediately until the light illuminates constantly. If it continues to flash, avoid heavy acceleration and high engine speed, stop the vehicle and have it checked immediately.

On some vehicles this light may be red – again stop the vehicle and seek assistance.

If it is safe to do so, try stopping the vehicle, switching off the engine, wait two minutes, then restarting the engine to reset the engine management system.

With the light illuminated, the vehicle is still safe to drive as long as no other faults are apparent with the engine. Have the vehicle checked by a dealer or garage as soon as possible to avoid any damage being caused to the catalytic converter.

As i said, in most cases it will be with the injectors. Not a major problem.

Ok, i put a bit more oil in and we went for a little drive, the light came on when i went over 25 and it started flashing, then when i slowed down a bit it went off....i sped up and it came back on.
i went outside the car and it was spluttering and this also happened when i was driving it aswell, evey time i came up to a junction the rev pointer went right down to o and the car just about cut out

there was a right bad smell of oil coming from either the exhaust or the engine

So I guess that it is using oil as you put a bit more oil in? Is it a petrol engine?

Original Poster

yes its a 1.6 clio dynamique, its petol,

the oil indicator says that the "oil is ok"

my it was smelling bad

I wouldn't drive it any further than you have to and get it checked out as soon as possible, that doesn't sound good. I have seen some cars where that light has come on flashing but despite numerous checks it is actually fine although the fact you are noticing problems seems to suggest that isn't the case.

i know, were taking it t the garage tomorrow.

please dont let this cost a bomb.....not with Xmas coming up !

just hope its not the catalytic converter.infact pray its not.just hope its dirty injectors

Was just a bit worrying when I read that you had to top up the oil. Well we seem to have established that some liquid is burning. So this must be oil or excess petrol. When you accelerate hard does smoke come out of the exaust?
If so and its using oil which suggests broken head gasket or cracked head which will be picked up on the sensors either side of you cat. This will damage your cat. Or it could be an over fueling issue which could be broken sensors, air blockage in the inlet manifold or an ecu problem.
Have you a modified exaust or sports air intake?

Is the car getting hot and have you checked the water? If it's low on water, it could be getting in the cylinders, then you definately should not drive it as it could finish off your head gasket

That's a very long shot. Have you taken it anywhere yet? And have you checked your water levels?

update on car,

i took it too garage this afternoon, the garage man looked at it and told me, my engine was about to jump out, dont know why but he said it was rattling that much it was about to jump out the bonnett.

The problem with the juttering and burning smell and whatever else was wrong with it was the spark plugs, the coil thing was not sparking it properly, the clio was only running on 3 coils instead of 4 thats why it was juttering and the revs were going too low.

wasnt that dear a repair thank goodness.

All better now hopefully, Mrs Saxo not very clued up on cars    so probably Mr saxo will explain it better when he comes home from his work

Good news Mrs Saxo.

Yup sure is, glad it was only that and not something serious and expensive haha, especially coming up to crimbo. :santa: :santa:

Thanks Syz

And, thanks everyone for the help!!!!

the same light comes on my merc if it gets damp.its not a major problem.

And do you know where the bloody dip stick is? its in the most stupid position at the front of the engine altho under a metal block, you have to have a really thin arm to get in between the sides

stupid french !
