Does XP 'see' the hard drive or is it a SATA one in which case you might need additional drivers

Original Poster

its an ide hardrive sata dvd rw it reads the cd then says ntdr missing

Look in the BIOS (press ESC or Delete, or whatever it tells you as soon as the machine boots) see if there is an option to behave like an IDE drive. If not you need to press F6 when installing XP and load the SATA drivers. Read the motherboard manual. Does the bios actually see the hard drive, try re-seating the cables.

Eh? The hard drive is ide but the dvd is sata?

havent bought a sata harddrive yet

I meant I thought it was strange that a PC has both IDE and sata connectors inside. I thought you get one or the other, not both.

Original Poster

also tried to format the hard drive and still get this error

HDD is not set-up or formatted correctly, check BIOS and format of HDD, also could be a corrupt boot sector

Original Poster

how do i ascertain which it is or do i just keep going through them

Original Poster

i have formatted hd and checked bios and still the same so how do i do the boot sector please

In the BIOS make sure that CDROM's boot before HDD in the boot device list.

I had this a while ago and turned out HDD was faulty

In that case, what happens when you insert the XP CD and get to the point where it asks you to format the HD,? Does it get that far?

so i would have to buy another hd or can this be fixed as the hd is recognized

csiman can sell you a copy of XP HOME if your XP CD is faulty. lol

* Insert the Windows CD and start the computer.
* When the Welcome to Setup screen appears, press R.
* Type a number corresponding to the Windows installation you wish to repair (usually 1) and press Enter.
* When prompted, type the administrator password and press Enter.
* From the command prompt, copy NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM from the i386 folder of the CD to the root folder of the hard drive. In the example commands given below, C: is the hard drive and D: is the CD-ROM drive. You will need to change the drive letters if appropriate:
COPY D:\I386\NTLDR C:\
COPY D:\I386\NTDETECT.COM C:\
* Remove the Windows XP CD from the drive and restart the computer.

may work if everything is set up correctly, worth checking the slave/master jumpers on the HDD and cdrom

are you sure the hd is formatted to NTFS ??? also does the disc drive work & does the cd work ? is it readable on another pc ?

edit : so its the hd ............ plug it into another pc if possible & see if windows recognises it

ye it does sound like the hd is corrupted ......... have you got a spare pc you can connect to ???

also do you only have one Hd..... if you have more than one, is it set to master & other set to slave ?

if its a single, is it connected properly, try using a different ide cable (if you got a spare)

have changed the cables and the jumpers still the same

when it boots from cd press any key Once only. When it asks again do not press anything.

Make sure you have the boot order set correctly in bios, It makes no difference if your are choosing fat32 or ntfs.

you need to have used Fdisk to setup harddrive first or one of the quick seagate/maxtor/ Ontrack tools to partition drive etc

Loose or Faulty IDE/EIDE hard disk drive cable
This issue has been known to be caused by a loose or fault ]IDE/EIDE cable. If the above recommendation does not resolve your issue and your computer hard disk drive is using an ]IDE or ]EIDE interface. Verify the computer hard disk drive cable is firmly connected by disconnected and reconnecting the cable.
If the issue continues it is also a possibility that the computer has a faulty cable, try replacing the hard disk drive cable with another cable and/or a new cable.

No, there will be an option to do it manually.
Once you F8 to accept the terms, it will list the partitions found... if there is more than one line of text there then you have more than 1 partition. Press D to delete the partitions, and then L to confirm, until they are ALL gone. Then create one big partition.

done this and still only gives 233 gig

Thats about right.
250GB is not the same as 250k bytes.
250k bytes is actually 232GB.
