Hoping someone can help

I'm looking to purchase a domain that will allow us to have separate email addresses

i.e

[email protected]familyname.com
[email protected]familyname.com

etc

can this be done?
how much roughly?
beast place to go?

any help appreciated

I think they all give you the option to create your own email addresses. I am with 1&1 and have several addresses.

I presume familyname.com is availible for a start for purchase? Technically yes it could be done but you would need the address of course first as you know

our name is available, some sites are charging around £6.99 - £25 per year for it

so basically if I buy lets say "phoenix72.com" I can add any [email protected]phoenix72.com

any suggestions on best place to go . . . 1+1 looks good so far

I use 1&1 and you can just buy the domain and use forwarding email addresses (ie ones that forward to your existing email provider) or can pay a little more to have full email accounts with them.

Once you have a domain you can make any email addres @ that domain.

.co.uk would be cheapest domain to get but depends what ya want.

how much do you pay extra, as I cant see how you have numerous accounts free with the domain

123-reg is good for stuff like this.

Get a domain and you get 15 email addresses free with that domain.

You can just do emails as well if needed.

I don't pay anything extra. I can, if I really wanted to, create up to 100 email addresses. You'll get the option to create yours as soon as you buy the domain.

In my experience (and only going by the control panel access I've seen) and the general unhelpflness of 1&1 staff, they are quite possibly the last company I'd buy through.

What's a package? I'm just talking about buying a domain. All of my co.uk domains are bought through 123-reg all can have as many email addresses as I please.

I hope you're not telling me you've parted with money to buy one or more email boxes with 123-reg? X)

That's not the first time you've asked what a package is Guv........

With 123-reg, you can buy starter, business and unlimited. Starter is actually 100 email addresses now.

I think you're getting confused Guv. We buy the domain and the hosting for our clients - with that comes email.

I'll leave it there to stop further embarrassment for you.

.com's do tend to be slightly dearer, but not necessarily so. Always buy those from a us based company. Most have offers every now and then. My last cost me approx £1.50 for a year. In fact that reminds me.... I have a free .com domain owing to me with dreamhost!

Brb emailing your mum! X)

Good grief!

Oh lawd! I didn't think it could get any funnier!

So you host your domain with the same company you host your website with?

I really do hope you don't do this stuff for a living!

No. We supply 'packages* to clients so they can use them as stand alone. We can 'pass them over' to them with the 'packages'* they buy from us. Can't say any more or mods will think I am self promoting.

maybe I'm being "thick" . . . but here is what I want to do . .

I want to buy a domain name for our family, so lets call it "Jones.com" for ease

I, my wife and 2 kids will want to have email to send and receive from this,

ie

[email protected]jones.com
[email protected]jones.com
[email protected]jones.com
[email protected]jones.com

I dont want to set up "forward" email to existing accounts

So, in short, will a domain allow the above from buying a yearly domain "starter" for a few quid?

Thanks for all the help . . and laughter so far

Buy your .com domain from dreamhost.com. This will be your only outlay.

In the control panel at dreamhost, set up gmail. This will allow your (individual) gmail account to manage individually. For this you will get SIX gigabytes of storage. You can access your mail either by mail.dad.jones.com or download into outlook, or access as gmail with a login as any normal gmail account. You will have UNLIMITED account / email addresses too. (so your [email protected]jones.com etc isn't an issue)

When someone sends to [email protected]jones.com it arrives straight into your inbox. There is no forward taking place as the MX records are dealt with properly at dreamhost. When you send an email, it is sent from [email protected]jones.com

I am absolutely positive others will tell you this method is not only the cheapest, safest way to manage, it's also damned easy to control and set up.

You can always buy from a reseller a "package". lol

I simply bought my domain and then used Google Apps (GAFYD).

You can use GMail and other google apps with your own domain and it's free for up to 50 personal users.

8gb storage, archiving, smtp and you can setup mail.domain.com to access the web interface and/or use pop3/imap.

Simple to setup.

Short & sweet answer, yes it can be done. You can access your emails individually via a web interface from the domain supplier i.e. 1and1 or via Outlook. You may also be able to access this via individual Hotmail accounts but not 100% sure on this.
