they thought it would be good to hide the kitten while i went looking for it.but when i put force on the door the frame moves.how much damage do you think it will do if i barge it open

Unscrew the handle mounting from the door - the lock on a modern internal door is all part of the handle. You should then be able to use the central part to open the catch.

kids arent laughing now as they have retired to their rooms .out of the way .wrong time of the year to end up with a bill from the landlord

Can you see the lock? Is it the type that just twists and locks? Maybe get a screwdiver and turn it?

the lock works on the same basis as opening the door it has a bar throug it but it will not turn all the way round to the unlocked position .

erm ur kids managed it, why dont u just ask them to show u.

any chance of posting a photo of the handle?

I recently replaced the handles on all of my doors. Have you unscrewed the surround from the door handle and removed the bar - that often releases or gives enough movement for the catch to be retracted from the frame.

is the lock jammed because its not supposed to be open or jammed because its just stuck? if its just stuck maybe some oil will help to get it loose

try using a basic generic key (many work for more than one lock) and if that fails there is always c4.

Does the door open into the bathroom or out? If you can see the hinges then you might be able to prise them off a little and cut through the screws with a hacksaw.

It might be cheaper to break the door than get a locksmith out!

I'm not being patronizing but - Can't you ask a Bloke who lives nearby?

This reminds me of when i was little. I locked myself in the bathroom, then hid in the airing cupboard (which could only be opened from the outside  ).
My dad had to take the door off its hinges to get me out.

whilst trying to turn the lock with a driver push the door as the lock has jammed, pushing the door should unstiffen it:thumbsup:

ok next post how do i cover up or fix the cracked frame cheap as possible as this could not have happened at a worse time as i am due my annual inspection in 8 days

i'd say, get the kids to work out how they're gonna help pay for the door frame, and in the process learn some responsibility. sounds serrious but u can make it fun, like they get points for good behaviour or put aside x pence towards it every day.

rep left for all my little advisors and helpers

Either glue the crack or put in that putty stuff (Wood Filler [From thej]) ? Use a credit card to smooth it, then re paint. Or go to b&q, I dont think wood frames are that expensive. Will be a better job then a patch.

I know it's not going to help, but we never had locks on our bathrooms, sounds weird I know but it was simple, if the doors open, go right it, if its closed it's occupied. Because imagine if it wasn't a kitten but one of your kids. They would be hysterical.

edit- Some of it just didn't make much sense.
