help needed please regarding hitting a car

    Banned
Well am saying its down to pregnancy brain, but i accidentaly hit my friends car while reversing the other day, i was doing no more than 3mph and have managaed to leave a small dent in her car, lol am no good with measurements but it is about this big

    ______________

the dent is just above the wheel and tbh hardly noticable, spoke to my friend striaght away and said i would pay for it to be sorted, and at the time said if i have to will go through my insurance, she said "oh dont worry about it" he husband was there, and he said ohh ill be able to knock that out dont worry about it..... anyway within 2 hours she pops up on facebook saying Hi have u phoned ur insurance yet? hadnt really thought about it but said oh no not yet, anyway OH has said as we have got a bigger car and the insurance is sky high as it is, would be best to avoid the insurance and to pay for it ourselves, spoke to her about it and she said oh yes thats fine if thats what u want to do, anyway, she has popped up on faacebook 10 times asking me if ive rang insurance yet!!!

and today she has said she has got a quote and is going to cost about £300!!!!

surely this cant be right? u cant even see the dent unless u get super close, there is no scratches to the paintwork or anything?

anyway rant over, just wondered if anyone knows roughly what this would cost to put right?

Sounds like the end of a friendship.

Why is she corresponding via facebook, do people not speak to each other anymore.

Regarding the dent then £300 could be correct but sounds a little high. It's very hard to do without seeing it.

Who was her quote with, ask her to get a couple (or offer to do it for her)

Depends on where dent is exactly, if it's on the crease then it can cost a lot to sort, but if on a flatter part of the bodywork then it seems very excessive - ask her to get a couple of written quotes for you to look at

maybe say you will get a quote from a few garages and then pay the cheapest, ive no idea how much it would cost but if you think shes trying to pull a fast one then it might be the best option.

Depends on the panel if it can be got to from inside the car it might pop out without to much cost £80>£100 if its a section like a rear wheel arch or somewhere difficult it could require pulling out and filler / respray so cost could be a few hundred.

if there car is old it might not be a big issue but if its a nice new car then insurance might be the way to go

As mentioned above ask to her to get a couple of quotes or do it for her....also would be worth ringing a few garages and getting some quotes....then you'll know if you're being ripped off or not

£300 sounds the right price for a small dent.

People dont understand how much work and effort has to go into repairing such a small area.. if the dent was double the size it would still be around the same price..

For example. its not just a case or repairing / painting the dent only, you have to spray the full affected area to enure you blend the paint back in correctly,

For an example, a "supermarket carpark" dent will typically cost you around £250 -£350 depending on location..

Tell your friend to get 3 quotes and take it from there, no body shop will quote you a price over the phone without seeing the car.

    a place like this:

    dentfix.co.uk/hom…asp
might be useful, they specialise in dents, just google for dent specialists, theres loads

id also say you will pay once they have had the work done and also ask to see the receipt so you know they are not ripping you off.

If the paint isn't broken it might be possible to pull/push the dent out

have since found out that... he husband on saturday has tried to jack the car up for something and has dented all the inside of the car too..... just underneath where i hit... i hope she is not trying to make me pay for that too....

take photos of it, they may have made it worse

I'd go look at the car to see what damage is there now, if there is more, refuse to pay for them to fix their heavy hands. If it's the same damage that you caused, tell her to get at least 3 quotes, once she has done that, tell her to go with the cheapest one and to send you the receipt for it once it is done, then you will reimburse her. She doesn't sound like much of a friend, so don't allow yourself to be fooled.

Seems to me you is getting a lot of crappy advise from idiots on here.
The bottom line, you hit her stationary car. If you are not happy with £300 price she is quoting then you have only one other option, go through your insurance.
Whether you like it or not, if your neighbour decides to hell with this because of any dithering on your part and tells her insurance company to go ahead and persue the claim, you will have no option but to settle this way, so my advice is hospital or not, and excuses or not talk nicely to them or pay the consequences. You were at fault after all.

Is your insurance likely to rise by that amount if the claim goes through it. If not then let the insurers deal with it.

In fairness you did damage her car so you need to do the decent thing and get it fixed, and as soon as possible really.
Get her to get 3 quotes or offer to do it for her and then go with the best.
If you are concerned that there is more damage now than when you first hit the car then you need to talk that through and have a good look at the car.
You may still salvage a friendship if you get on with it. She may feel that you've tried to just brush over it, which wouldn't be nice. I think her using facebook to converse is just because she's feeling awkward about it, not what I'd do but each to their own.
Hope it gets sorted soon x

I hate it when the wife comes back with another supermarket dent! The car seems to attract fools who should not be on the road and don't care less about anybody else.

Its nice to know that theirs at least one person in the world who has a sense of common courtesy towards others!

Hope it all works out fine!

check it yourself, if theres more damage tell her to **** off

if its the same, go with her to get various quotes and pay the lowest

get your own quote and then you'll know

So jacking underneath has dented the inside. Probably as he jacked it at a non specified jack point...

What a nob!!!.. He has probably cracked the paintwork and rust protection under the car now which will eventually rust and turn the car into a useless piece of junk...

No offence, friend or no friend I would now insist on your insurance company and get the repairs done that way...

If someone hit my car and I had to go and get quotes, I would charge for the time... Actually I would go through the insurance, as that what it you pay it for, get it towed away, a hire car dropped off, and charge the lot to the person who had done the damage..

so many people being too nice on here! yes it is a shame you hit the car for both your sakes it is going to cost time and money and i hope you get it sorted but it sounds as if she is being a bit cagey now! anyway £300 seems a bit much for a small dent as not long ago my friend reversed into my passengers door and made a big dent and you could see it and i needed a full new door and it cost £500 and that was replacing a door so £300 seems a bit much to me for just a small dent and another thing i dented my husbands slightly and i went to halfords and it cost £155 to put right so i would get more info and quotes 1st before just paying up.

    +1

All depends on dent and location, one of those dent master type places (Don’t know what they call them in the UK) should be able to push it out as long as they can get access to it.

Body shop repair price at £300 may be fair enough, a small dent being filled then painted is more than people think, they may have to spray into the wing or the door depending on where the dent is.

Its not ideal, but if you do the damage you pay the money and be done with it.

To be honest if a friend of mine had just came out of hospital and damaged my car I would definitely not chase them for the money. On the other hand if I damaged someone else’s vehicle then I would want to get it fixed and sorted and out of the way as soon as possible.

Fair point ! BUT i think its a bit lousy of her friend AND her Husband to look at it at the time and say 'dont worry about it ' and that he would be able to pull dent out himself !! THEN two hours later ( after they have had time to talk, and by sounds of things realised they could possibly 'cash in ') they are hounding the poor girl and suddenly changing there tune !!

:giggle: Bad grammar AND unable to read ! Poor thing

Perhaps they changed their mind and want the car repaired properly.

You're best to advise your insurer as they have requested it. For smaller claims like this they will probably just send your friend a cheque and tell them to get it repaired.

If you're concerned about the money, ask to see the estimate - but you might rock the boat that way with your friend.

Either way, the cost doesn't really matter, as your insurer will cover it.

Speaking from personal experience only a few days ago, I had a similar incident - expecting a cheque for £350.

BTW, my damage was for minor scratches and dents to the rear bumper, cost of repair £273 + VAT - cost of new bumper etc £600 + VAT.

Car repair is expensive if it's done right.

It is rather unfortunate, but I have seen on many an occasion that on first inspection the damage looks minimal, then to console the person that has done the damage (As they may be upset, even though its you that should be upset) you tell them its no problem, it will pull out, I can fix it etc etc.

Then you realise hold on I cant fix this , why did I even suggest I could fix this :?, I may bring it to someone actually qualified in body repair, then they tell you some facts about it being in an awkward place and we have to spray half the car to blend it in properly, then you have the more than awkward position of going to someone asking them for a large amount of money without them thinking they are getting ripped off.

Or maybe they are just being ripped off, probably either or

Just go through the insurance company. After reporting it, go and have a look at the car (as mentioned before, it is not unknown for an insurance company just to send a cheque), if she does not have the car repaired, report her for insurance fraud (for both this and the carpets thing) here:

    Thanks for your advice

They have to be rude because they have nothing useful to add and they think it's makes them look intimidating and important. Don't worry op just stick them on ignore, they like to hunt around, usually in a pack looking for someone who needs a little advice to berate and belittle.

Don't you know you are supposed to be an expert in every field before posting on here.

Sad and pathetic really, they can't have anything better to do.
