Help needed please with laptop/notebook selection

Laptop/notebook is intended mostly for the following 4 purposes. Its for a 12 yr old...

- Basic net surfing (speed of internet is around 4 MBPS)
- Word/excel/powerpoint related work
- watching DVDs and listening to songs
- watching youtube videos

Which one would you recommend? Also do all 3 have an optical drive for playing DVDs

Lenovo Ideapad S12

none of em have optical drive internally
you can get a full size laptop for a little more (than the u450)
eg dell 1545
if its not going to be transported about (id not want my kid carrying it about) then 15incher alot more useful allround really but best bet it to trawl computers section and see whats on offer for your budget and needs.

Thanks a lot brilly...Yes, you're right - its not going to be transported much, probably mostly around home and at best to the neighbours place !! Just trawling through the computer section now...not too many hot deals - most of the deals are notebooks !!

Thanks anyway !!

np i edited above post - the u450 didn't come with dvd drive - you had to pay extra for an external.
the dell posted above is in the top 5 hottest of month right now.
obviously each time you spend more you can get better but i think its a good example of a good value solid allrounder

What ever you buy get the software4students office 2010 ( professional I think) for about £40 that's what we did for my 12 year old and then my neighbour bought the same for her 13 year old.

What about this?
Toshiba at Dabs
Looks quite good for the money. imo

argos.co.uk/sta…htm would be the one I recommend. Yes, it's a bit more expensive, but that's future proof. I can see that still being usable in 10 years.

I would strongly recomend a wireless keyboard and mouse to go with the laptop at home.
