*** HELP needed re: Graphics card for Dell Dimension desktop ****

We have a Dell Dimension5160 desktop computer. Works perfectly well...but my wife recently bought " PLug In Suite 4 " for Photoshop and some of the functions won't wotk......

WE were advised to replace the graphics card...tried updating drivers etc from Dell , all to no avail.

Anyone offer any help as to what card we should go for....it's purely for running this software...not for gaming etc...so looking to do this for a reasonable price.

Also...how easy is it for a non techy like me to do this??

As a guideline our local indie Computer shop will sell and install a card for £50 all in....is this the best option?

for me i would prob. buy a new desktop for around £200 and install graphic card myself.

what sort of interface is needed for your deksop? pci-e, etc

    The specifications require:

OpenGL 1.5 capable video card with 128MB VRAM

First you need to find out whether your machine has a slot for a new graphics card - if you don't meet the above specification it's very possible you've got integrated graphics and dell haven't included a slot for a seperate graphics card. The 5160 isn't listed on Dell's website so are you sure you've got the right model? If so then something like ]CPU-Z will tell you if you've got a slot for a graphics card and what type it is, check under the mainboard tab.

    If you meant a 5150, you'll need a PCI / PCI-E graphics card (motherboard layout/specs ]here).

Way too much, but will depend on what card they propose to install. It is still too much to spend just to be compatible with the software.

If we can determine it is indeed PCI-E, I could possibly do you a suitable one for £12-20 (in the ]Classifieds section), & tell you how to fit it for free.
