can you download a free program? avg got rid of my nasty when i got one

1. remove norton

2. install ]AVG free version (unless someone advises something better for free) then

3. install ]spybot then

4. install ]spyware blaster then

5. Do all the updates and then run the applications.

That's what I usually do on people's PC to sort out these issues.

Try www.avast.com
Great program

oops soz i see you done that :-(

Spybot removed the virus that I had that Norton did not even detect.

These type of viruses will be difficult to remove. Anti virus packages can remove currently loaded viruses but are not clever enough to prevent process spawns when a PC is restarted. What this means is that upon a reboot, the same virus is launched. Some people will ask, why don't anti virus software remove the launcher and the reason is that encryption is used so pattern matching cannot be employed to detect certain bit patterns. I am sure you will receive the virus again even if an anti virus package has appeared to have removed the virus.

The most effective way to remove the virus is to put the infected hard drive into another PC and allow a virus scan on the infected drive to take place. You must ensure that no application is to be executed from the infected hard drive though! This has an advantage of preventing the virus re-spawning once it detects that it has been shut down. Also, prior to this, it is also important to shut down unknown services and start up processes from MSConfig as these are the main route for the launcher to respawn viruses upon bootup. A System Restore would restore the registry to a previous date which could also facilitate with the removal of unwanted startup processes and services but as the registry is restored to a previous copy there are implications on software that has been installed subsequent to the date of the system restore.

Sorry this may sound convoluted but virus writers today are not stupid and do know of methods to circumvent detection and destruction from anti virus packages.

Spybot , Ad-aware , Spysweeper and a host of others are programs that find and delete SPYWARE ,MALWARE & the more recent RANSOMWARE . Anti-virus programs such as Norton , McAfee , Kaspersky ,AVG are primarily designed to find virus's . Two different things altogether although some spyware contain virus's .I've read in some instances where folk install Spybot and think it is going to get rid of everything..............it wont .You need a good Anti-virus program and a good anti-spyware program or even two . I use Spybot & Ad-aware and have done for years , for my anti-virus program I use Kaspersky .
At the end of your internet session or when you think your PC is running slower than normal ...come off line and scan for virus's , then scan for spyware using the two programs mentioned , but not at the same time . I allways found what spybot misssed , ad-aware found and visa-versa .

Dont forget to use the Norton removal tool or it wont be completely gone, service1.symantec.com/Sup…039 even if you uninstaled via progs

format the hdd and re-install windows best bet all round

God , the number of times I've read this ..........................format and re-install windows .

"I've have just picked up a virus , what should I do ?" ...............format the drive
"my PC is running slow , what should I do ?" ..............................format the drive
"I seem to have lost my holiday photos , what should I do ?".....format the drive
" my dog has ******* on the neighbors lawn , what should I do ?" ..format the drive

It was only on Monday one of the teachers at work had changed the keyboard to Russian,
no one could log on . At the logon screen the lower left box was labled RU and even the
administrators could'nt get passed that . A search on the net gave the answer ................
format the drive ! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh............another searched revealed the answer .........
without formatting the drive and restoring the keyboard to UK .
So, there may always be an alternative to formatting . I agree though , sometimes it is the best
solution if the PC has severe problems , it's only not everyone is clued up on doing such a task .
A re-install means loading all the drivers and all the software , all your internet settings and favorites etc and
backing up all your downloads before you start . You may have to do it sometime ,so get some practice !

i've done all these am still getting the you have a security problem message that diverts me to try and get me to buy software
spybot says this for one of the things....
Company:
Product: Smitfraud-C.
Threat:

Description
This program installs itself through the internet and creates new desktop wallpaper. This wallpaper looks like a Windows 98 blue screen and contains a warning that the computer is infected with viruses, that one should download run a virus scanner and that the computer wouldn't work in normal mode. In addition to this one gets a desktop icon leading to a pretended anti virus application named PSGuard. Scanning the computer with this software will return a virus found (that was installed by this software itself). In order to remove this virus one has to download the full version for about 20 EUR.
Another unpleasant effect of Smitfraud-C. is that some configuration options in the Control Panel will no longer be available. This way it stops the user from changing the wallpaper and forces him to keep the blue screen. Overall Smitfraud-C is a very sneaky software trying to sell PSGuard by frightening less experienced users.

can anyone help? thanks

what is the actual 'security problem message' you keep referring to?

spybot often returns false threats like smitfraud-c but if your wallpaper cannot be changed as per the threat description then this is how to remove it.

WARNING: I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THESE INSTRUCTIONS. DON’T USE IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
1. Boot to Windows Safe mode
2. Run HijackThis (you need to first search for and download it if you haven’t got it)
3. Click “Open the Misc Tools section”, then “Delete a file on reboot…”, select the dll file that Spybot has been complaining about, and close HijackThis.
4. Reboot Windows to Normal mode
5. Run Spybot Search and Destroy. It will again detect Smitfraud-c, but this time around it will be able to remove it.

same thing happened to me hunny

i was almost in tears after trying everything but
i cured it and you WILL TOO

ok this is my pennies worth lol

first go to RUN and type in %temp%
everything in that folder is junk ... tmeporary files
delete it all
if the bastido is in there you might get rid of him
if he is attatched to another file or reg key its harder so you

GO TO DOWNLOAD.COM

and FIRSTLY get........ CRA...P CLEANER /
( Ccleaner other name)

this removes all traces of just about everything and it the DOGS!

they have thier own forum where techies can advice you too :-D just search for it google!

Next i would try is .... Anit Vira also from downlaod.com and free excelent program! found stuff that avast, spybot, norton, mac afee, ect didnt

if these fail then try spyware detector ... its a pay program about £20 but worth the moeny as this was the only program that found and killed my WORM virus also from download.com

riko please google the subject of Stealth viri, a keyboard assignment is one thing, viral infection is something entirely different .
Learning to re-install is a very easy option for anyone compared to having to sort out the mess from having a keylogger pass on all your credit card/bank details to some spotty teenage hacker.

hi everyone thanks for all your help i have logged on this morning & all seems to be fine now yaayyyyy!!! (touch wood)
thanks, it was really kind of you all to help me out & rep will be left for all of you :-D

Good advice Nicki, CCleaner is great and keeps things tidied up if used regularly.

For what is is worth i will recommend a firewall (Zone alarm, or Comodo)

anti-virus (AVG maybe but AVG 8 doesn't seem to be all that)

spyware doctor or adaware (run scans once a week)

Spyware blaster (a firewall for spyware

CCleaner

Job done

Oh and it is worth bearing in mind if you do contract a virus and suspect it has been there for a while disable windows system restore until the virus has been removed, otherwise if you restore the computer at any time it might restore to a date when there was the virus
