    Help needed with graphics card.

So I bought a rx 480 yesterday and it was working perfectly for a couple of hours but then suddenly when I was just doing some simple word processing the whole pc turned off. I've been doing some troubleshooting and I've found out the pc boots if I unplug the 6+2 power cable but if the cable is plugged in all I get is a quick flicker of the LEDs and a twitch of the fans. My power supply is a 80+ evga 500w so I don't think the power supply is the issue. What do you guys think, dead graphics card? Any help would be appreciated.

From what you say it sounds like it "is" the PSU do you have access to another power supply to troubleshoot?

Rx480 needs at least a 500w psu, so I'd look at getting a 600+ model.

I could borrow my friend's one. Wouldn't the card only be needing that much power if it's at load though? I was literally writing an essay on Microsoft Word. Don't systems with even gtx 1080s only use around 250-300 watts at load anyway?

did you install fresh windows or was card an upgrade ?
if upgrade i would dload ddu and run that a couple of times to clean previous drivers, then see how it goes

Did you swap out an existing card, could try that again and see if you have same problem. If not then put the 480 back in. I have just done an upgrade, i5 6600k, sapphire r480 nitro 4gb and 16gb memory with corsair 650w PSu - no problems. I realise this is more than yours so not compariable but just letting you know it could be you need a higher PSu but usual it rebooted during word.

I assume you checked the PSU cables for possible damage/shorts ?

My setup is actually very similar to yours. I am certain that it's a graphics card issue because I have read up of similar issues. I must be the most unlucky graphics card buyer in the world because this is the second card in a row that's been faulty. Got a GTX 970 a couple weeks back which was also broken.

Sounds like another issue then if two diff cards aren't working properly. What other hardware have you changed and what haven't you changed?

Can I just say you need to consider total system load on a PSU you can have ample wattage but it still fail this site I use for builds allows you to put in all what you have E.G HDD's SSD;s and other stuff to check make sure not only the load but also things like AMP's are Ok the site is outervision.com/pow…tor run through that to check the only other thing that comes to mind in maybe a damaged PCIE slot on the MB.

Well the GTX 970 had a completely different issue, the monitor would lose video input as soon as I loaded up a game. I'm using my old r7 370 now which has always worked fine.
