Use the windows 7 codecs pack from here shark007.net/win…tml

all you'll have to do after installing is rightr click the file and tell it to open with media player if it won't play it by double clicking the video file

Try VLC Player, but if it is a HD file, your PC just might not be … Try VLC Player, but if it is a HD file, your PC just might not be powerful enough.

i dont think there is unless youve got a super fast computer, converting takes a lot of processing power

Here's the simple answer. GOMPlayer plays any file :). It'll ask for you to download the codec once you've done that it'll be fine!

Pretty sure all thats doing is basically changing the file extention seeing as they basically have the same x264 codec.

no - it certainly does a re-encode of some kind as you can see it progressing.

tried renaming the mkv to mp4 & avi but the ps3 wont play it. Put it through mkv2vob and the mp4 plays perfectly on the ps3.

sorry pal im a bit dumb when it comes to things like this. so i have a hd movie which is an mkv file i think which doesnt work on my dvd player as it doesnt support HD. if i use your converting tool does that not change the type of file so i can then play on my dvd or is it still classed as being a hd movie? my dvd player supports xvid, avi and mp4 I THINK so would this not work?

I tried to simplify it by saying it basically renames the file. Thats not just what its doing. But its defo not converting the file. Even with the fastest of home computers this takes ages and requires a few passes.

What codec are you using for xp?

mkv2vob and you end up with an mp4 file . Strange it's not *.vob

    It transcodes

    en.wikipedia.org/wik…ode

In true transcoding, the bitstream format of one file is changed from one … In true transcoding, the bitstream format of one file is changed from one to another without its undergoing another complete decoding and encoding process. This usually is possible if the source and target codecs are sufficiently similar. However, support for this process very much depends on the case. The most popular method of transcoding is to decode the original data to an intermediate format (i.e. PCM for audio or YUV for video), in a way that still contains the content of the original, and then encoding the resulting file into the target format.Transcoding may also refer to the process of directly changing assembled software code to work on a different platform or operating system. While it is usually preferable to use source code and recompile the application, there are times when doing so is either impractical or impossible. This usually occurs when the source code is unavailable. One example, such as in the case of Wine, is taking Direct3D function calls and turning them into OpenGL calls.
