would help if you gave the name and model number of the boiler as they are all different
have you checked to see if you actually have gas?

thanks, yes I guess so as it lights initially?
Its a Glow-worm hideaway, cant find any serial no or anything, sorry!
It is probably a new thermocouple that you need but it has to be fitted by a gas engineer
Hope this helps

thanks, is that expensive? any ideas?

When mine wouldn't stay on it was the thermocouple but it just needed cleaning, so it just cost me the cost of a call out.
A couple of years ago it cost me about £20 I think

Okay, that sounds less ominous, thanks
A quick google points to that thermo wotsit, also says not expensive,so hopefully it's that.

thanks everyone so much for your imput, wasnt the major crisis I thought, thank goodness!
So what?, does this mean you've cleaned it and it now works? http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn219/jumpingphil/what.gif

No, I thought by your post you had resolved it.
Sorry.

No problem, besides I like looking at your House picture!!!, so no ideas of how to clean it then, have hoovered just now and no luck, so it looks like an engineer then. But I appreciate the help.
The pilot light is lit 24/7. It's a constant burning stream of gas.

If the pilot light were to blow out, for whatever reason, the gas would then start leaking from the boiler resulting in suffocation of room occupants or an explosion.

To prevent this, they fit a safety device on the gas supply. The thermocouple, as hinted by the name, detects and reacts upon heat. It sits literally in the flame of the pilot light and gets hot whilst you hold in the knob on the ignition. When you let go, the thermocouple is hot and the gas continues to flow. If you let go too early, the pilot light goes out.

Should the pilot light go out, the thermocouple goes cold and the gas supply is shut off for safety.

As the thermocouple is sat right in a flame all day every day, it's going to wear pretty quickly and will need replacing over time. When it's broken, the pilot light will keep going out for no reason. This appears to be your problem.

It's illegal for an untrained person to tamper with any gas device to try a DIY fix. If you can't relight the pilot light with the knob, just call out an expert.
we had the same problem last year when we came back from holiday. It was the thermocouple that need replacing, think it cost £60 to have someone out to do it
Yep as people have said, thermocouple or blocked injector in the pilot light, if the injector gets blocked the flame of the pilot light wil be too small to heat the thermocouple and so this won't keep the gas valve open, very simple job, half hour at the most

thanks again for your help, have now contacted engineer, he will do a service clean and fit a thermacouple for 66 quid, but not til Friday!! ah well, cant have everything! I appreciate your help!
My old boiler would not light again when the pilot went out if the water pressure was below 1. So I had to up the water pressure and it would light again. It was a dodgy boiler tho so might have just been mine. Glad to have moved and not had any boiler problems since!

pilot light thermostat faulty, very easy to remove 2 minutes only, 10mm spanner should do it .take it off go to b and q ,only 5.5 quid for a new one i have just replaced mine today . it is a copper curled up wire that tells the boiler when to switch on or off.they tend to burn out at the end after a while ,as i said a 2 minute job and will save you a lot of cash .no gas or electrics involved in the process.anyone can do this honest. good luck
Iv added a radator to my house now my glow worm boiler keeps flashing fault i turned i off for five seconds ike it says an it flashes fault again iv bled all rads
your boiler should have a w/p gauge, it usually needs to be set between 1 to 2 bar to work..
My boiler turns on with an electric switch but is gas fired and the heating works but every time i put the shower on the green liggt which seems to be the pilot goes out and water doesnt get hot but radiators stay on...... Help???

Have you been messing with it or changed any radiators?
If so (courtesy of Google) then most likely its faulty switching valve. The one which switch the heat supply between central heating and tap water heating. These valves often dies after tampering with the system and pressure - radiator change is that case.
Sounds like the diverter valve, if you've already tried upping the pressure. The part could cost anywhere from £15-£60 plus labour. Definitely a job for a plumber, if it is the valve. (Google)

Hmm I have the same problem. No hot water but warm radiators. I got a plumber who said it was the diverter gone.

worked out thanks what was wrong. had turned on the valves(?) for filling up the system with water and hadn't turned them both off again!

What's with all the old threads being bumped??

Why come on a shopping forum as opposed to calling an expert or something??

could be overheating, if so safety cut out kicks in, could well be pump failure, has your water pump 3 settings? if so try it on a higher setting if not already on it..
I have a Glow-Worm Fuel Saver Mark 11 boiler to heat rads only. The pilot ignites fine but the main burner goes out at any time between 5 minutes and and hour or so although the rads heat up. I have had a new thermocouple fitted (twice in a year) and my boiler engineer has added a litre of Sentinel but remains puzzled. Is is serviced every year. Any ideas please ?
