Hi all, hoping someone could help me. I have just purchaced a UK 1999 bmw 318ti compact, automatic, E36 engine that has done 70K and I have no paperwork to say if the cambelt has been changed, I was wondering if it has a cam belt or a chain?

many thanks, rep will be left for any help.

Thanks for that, but I have been serching the net for info on this and one of the articles I had read said that all american ones had chains but not all european ones, your link I think is american so does not help me unfortunately. Rep left for your help. Thanks again Evil monkey.

Sorry no idea, perhaps you could ring a BMW service center and ask nicely to speak to one of their mechanics to see if they know? Worth a shot.

the service light on these can be reset with a cheap tool, so you gotta be careful as unless you have a recent receipt for a service then id say it could possibly be due:)

Sorry to sound stupid, was reading on internet that the chain would last the life of the car, so thought it won't need changing.
