I'm going away in December for two weeks - few days in Bangkok then the rest of the two weeks in Khao Lak.

Does anyone have any info having been?

Also how much money ideally do you think i should take? Thai Bahts will prob really confuse me !! ha.

Also has anyone flown with Jet airlines before?

Thanks in advance for any help!! xxxx

thanks .. sorry i really couldn't work out which one to pop it in .. ta. xxx

Spent seven weeks in s.east asia couple of months back and for the whole time I was there I only spent £600 on food, basic but reasonable accommodation and travel so what i'm getting at is money goes a long way. For example in the more touristy areas a beer will cost about 60 Bhat which when I went was about a pound and food isn't very expensive fresh caught bbq fish could be bout for a couple of quid. Didn't go to khoa Lak didn't have time and all I can say bout Bangkok is its a crazy place that once you get your head round is quite cool. The tuk tuk drivers will try and rip you off though so don't be affraid to barter and don't let them take you to places to you don't want to go where they earn commission as its probs more expensive. When I went exchange rate was bout 60 bhat to the pound so not to confusing. Hope this helps.

    Do you mean jet airways?

My dad's flown with them and said they were excellent.

    Plus you'll get a nice shiny 777 or A340 :-D

I went to Thailand about 5 years ago - had a week in Bangkok, and a week in Koh Samui...

I'm not sure what the rates are now compared to then, but then it was soooo cheap! For a week in a beach hut on Ko Samui with all breakfast, evening meal, alcohol, and cigarettes (I smoked then), I paid the equivalent of £45! I couldn't believe it!

You have to barter everywhere... if a shop tells you a price for something, he will let it go for probably a quarter of that, of half at least.

It gets daft though, as you end up bartering all the time, and when you come out of the shop, and take into consideration the exchange rate, sometimes you're haggling over something like 50p! (which, really, is nothing to us, and quite a lot to them....)

I know what the matthewpayne's saying about the tuk tuks, but we paid 10 bahts each, and got taken to 3 impressive sites (including the Golden Buddah), and then just had to look in a jewellery store for 20 mins. For us (backpackers), it was worth doing....

One thing to note - some things are hard to take over there. There is a lot of poverty and you see children as young as 5, working outside the nightclubs trying to sell you garlands and things. You also see severly disabled people begging on the streets (I saw a lady that was singing for money - she had no arms and no legs... she was there every day, all day. Who was taking her there?!)

I went to thailand with my 11yr old in August it was amazing didnt fly with Jet though flew with quatar airways was collected at the airport which I strongly suggest unless you know where you are going I took 800+ photos and well i wish I was still there stayed in Bangkok, (Khao San Rd) Hua Hin, Chaing Mai, (travelling there on the overnight sleeper train and going elephant treking, MBK (shopping centre) etc etc if you need any more info just ask I am more than willing to help, one major point I would say is get a cheap old orange mobile I will PM later the details and get yourself a thai sim card as its really cheap then to call the UK I spent £25 for 2 weeks phoning home daily several times for about 15 mins a day really cheaper also text were cheap to a lot cheaper than roaming with your current provider

Im not going to thailand but it was interesting to read about everyones experiences

I lived in thailand for 6 years and since moving back to the UK we spend every Christmas for 6 weeks and Songkran which is Thai NY in april for four weeks over there. These are the peak times for travel and the most expensive so hopefully i should be able to save you some money and help.

The Baht is at a pretty rubbish exchange at the moment, yesterday it was touching 1.53 so had crept up a little. The worry is what will happen when we cut interest rates again in december. If the Americans drop theirs to zero then it might be ok, but we could take a battering if they dont as the Baht is going to go the way of the dollar. The best way to take your money is to have a nationwide account and draw it out for free., this way you get the inter bank lending rate that is relevant at the time.

If you are staying at a hotel on Khao Lak, and it has already been arranged through a package or advanced booking, which i would think is the case given the time of year you are going and the destination, then you can charge food, drinks etc to your room and pay at the end via credit card. This can save you having to give tips on every single little thing. I am all for tipping by the way but not on everything, i would rather give at the end to those that deserve it, iykwim.

How are you travelling from Bangkok to Khao Lak? Is this all part of a package?

I can give advice on pretty much all you would want to know, but no point going on about things you do not need advice on.

We always use credit cards!!! I just keep receipts and check them all off when i get home. I have never had a problem yet, but yes can see where there could be a problem but is that not a risk anywhere?

V2, sounds like you have the Thailand fever running through your veins as well. The place is rather addictive for most, i think it just gets some to a whole different level.
weird that i have spent almost a third of my life over there and yet i have never been to Hau hin??? It has just never appealed to me, but can see why it does to some people being a short hop from Bangkok. I often went to Koh Chang instead for the shorter trips that i did not want to do much travel. What is there? Maybe we should have a look sometime when we go? I am not a fan of Samui at all! The airport however is my fave, so cute. I love the way that they have a terminal 1 and 2, you have to have seen that to understand i know but im gathering you have. The island itself has gone down the pan for me, its been overcome by greed and has suffered alot of damage, due to the harsh floods that it has seen over the last few years. I suffer from the i saw it years ago and now hate to see what has happened, yet at the same time understand they need to have progress to have a life and make a living. Just too many greedy hands in the pot for my liking, too many big fish making money and not enough of the locals on the ground seeing the benefit.

I guess it is what it is at the end of the day. Most people would love it, its just not for me.

when is your next visit? We are looking at going soon, not christmas as its our sons first real christmas that he will know about but pretty much straight after. I am waiting for the fare dip after 15th Jan and then will book. I have never flown Jet we are members of Eva's ffp now so tend to stick to them, plus they are the cheapest for the better classes.

Dont turn it into another BG1 thread!!!:p

Funnily I was looking at the baht exchange rate a while back and was thinking how cheap it must be! First time I went there it was 35 baht to the £1.

I would hate to think how much it must have changed now.

Probably an idea to get one of the lonely planet books for a bit of guidance. I know my copy of "south east asia on a shoestring" was invaluable when I was travelling the world!

Cant help with the airline. First time I flew was with Tarom Rumanian Airways - and then Bangladesh Airways. I wouldnt recommend either!

when i first went it was 38 baht to thr pound but i stil lthink you got a lot more for your money then
an over night coach ride to chiang mai cost 50bt
a hut on the beach cost 70bt
food is stil very cheap if you wish to eat the "thai way"
but then the asian crash sent the baht up to over 100bt
    indonesia the worst sufferers
we go every year there and havuing lived there for over 5 years i have seen a dramatic change
still love it but doesnt feel like the real asia it was

When I saw this thread pop back up - that was my immediate thought!

Don Muang airport was full of protesters (to maximise world and media attention.)

I doubt very much this will have blown over by then. That said, its pretty much a military regime in charge - even when they're not in power! I doubt you will have any problems though. Most Thais are very friendly people by nature.

Thanks V2 and guv. Its all crazy mad. Since i put this post on there has been another nightmare - we changed planes in MUMBAI !!!!!! wonderful.
As we only have a 1 hour changeover we will stay in airport but its certainly not helping with all this nightmare cracking off !!! V2 i'm going to keep on top of checking the website really often !! So Guc you think all these crazy protests will still be going off a week on friday ??
    I'm gutted and worried.
Thanks so much for your help so far !! xxxxxxxx

I was there when it happened about 2 years ago and no pompems (guv will get the joke!) occured.Just enjoy your time keep calm and dont get annoyed at anything. Thais are very relaxed people on the whole and if you try not to let anything faze you it will be OK.Just be aware of the scams that do occur. Check out forums such as ]www.ThaiVisa.com for more info. Most important relax enjoy yourself and never argue (Thais dont like to argue)Have a great time:thumbsup:

    Pompems? Sorry ya got me!

I'd have to say there are many countries I'd turn and run from if there was a military coup going on. Thailand isn't one of them. Nothing will probably happen anyway outside of Bangkok.

Bad news! Sorry to hear! Are you insured? Surely if they cancel, you'd get a full refund? I'd imagine there must be some sort of clause that refers to military coups and alike?

don muang is no longer the international airport it moved 2 years ago
however they have control over both Suvarnabhumi international airport and Bangkok's domestic airport, Don Mueang.
its closed so no flights in or out

oh and i would still go if flights resume
this is between protesters and the goverment
they wont target or get "farangs" involved

We were just about to sort the insurance when this started going off BUT when we looked the ones we found DIDN'T cover for terrorist based things. This would include Bangkok AND the problems at Mumbai which we change planes at !!
Its all bad cos Mumbai is closed and Bangkok. Hopefully the airline will cancel the flight themselves because i think we may get money back then ?!
Lost out with hotels though :-(
Going to send all docs off to Halifax as MAY be able to claim a little back from them as i paid on my credit card ?! eek. x

What I was getting at was a little bit of surprise that your insurance would cover you going into a coup zone and allow you to cancel. Ive no idea if they will - just that there could be a possibility!

Not to sure where you are referring to re Singapore. Maybe Ko Samui? I know the airport exists there now - but wasnt when I went and a long ferry crossing was needed from Surathani.

    How does that work?

Did the airline cancel and change your flight details?

I certainly now dont think you have anything to worry about internally in Thailand.
