Help PLease My Son's PC Won't Boot Correctly

My Son's computer will not boot up correctly.
It is a Compaq machine running Windows XP.
As it begins to boot it comes up with a warning message about being interrupted previously and then provides 5 options:
    Safe mode
    Safe mode with networking
    Safe mode with prompt
    Last safe working configuraion
    Normal

I have tried all of the options but they all just go through a cycle and return to the same warning screen.

I have tried the F1 option and returned all setting to default ( I don't think any of them had been changed anyway).

I am now out of ideas and my Son is doing my head in as he wants to get back on his computer.

    Help Please!!

    Was their any problems before?

I had this problem before, I had to reinstall the start up disks in the end (or F12 to do the same)

Thanks for the advice. I just tried F12 and it did nothing just back to the same warning screen.

Try constantly pressing the F12 key when you start the pc up, I am sure I did this when mine went funny:thumbsup:

I thought when you tried safe mode you were given the option of a system restore instead. DO you get that option?

I gat an option to restore to last known good setting, but even when i choose that it just cycles and goes back to the warning screen.
I can't even enter any safe mode form of working.

Just tried F12 again and this doesn't appear to be an option with htis PC.

On his PC it is the Esc button to enter the boot menu - but this gives me 2 options plus a default. Once again no matter what i choose it goes back to the warning screen.

To make matters worse there are no recovery discs.

if you have windows xp on cd, goto your boot screen and select boot from cd and then follow the instructions to either repair or to reinstall

I think there lies my problem i don't have XP on disc. thanks for the advice though.

mega tap f12 as soon as you turn it on

if xp wont start it may be due to damaged boot sector or missing or corrupt ntldr or ntdetect.com files

to replace must copy fresh files from xp cd using copy command.
boot with xp and enter recovery console at command prompt type. (x = your cd rom drive)
    copy x:\i386\ntldr c:

    copy x:\i386\ntdetect.com c:

to repair damaged boot sector at command prompt type fixboot then press enter then Y

can you not borrow a xp from a mate ?, you stuck without it mate.

    good luck unrealuk

Sounds like a virus to me, has your son installed/uninstalled any 3rd party software recently or noticed anything unusual with the operating system?

I have also heard a lot of people saying they have had this after installing service pack 3, get ya hands on a copy of xp or you stuck

try here h10025.www1.hp.com/ewf…143 try get a set of recovery discs if that dont work sorry needs reinstalling

I think that this is a sign that the registry files has been damaged.
When this happened to me, I got the XP installation disc, where i think one of the options is to repair the XP.
Failed that, I did a fresh reinstall (all my important files were on another drive).
Since no XP disc, there is not much we can do, unless you went to get one... somehow
