Help please - printer and vista

I have a epson stylus colour 680 printer with a printer port and a laptop with a usb port and a a usb to printer port cable and a laptop running vista. The laptop says the cable thing is connected but that there is no printer connected. As I dont know my way around vista I dont know what to do to fix this. I tried rebooting and it still doesnt see it but when the laptop is switched off it makes the printer heads move

Does it still need the driver installed like you would normally if it had a normal printer cable???
I thought it said something about not needing a driver if using a usb cable but the usb cable is usb to old style printer connector

Doesn`t matter how it`s connected, drivers must be installed for your computer to recognise printer.:)
