Anyway when we recived our modem its not a wireless one.. and needs to be plugged in at all times, and i have a laptop and a computer really need it to be wireless ive got my old wireless modem still and just wondered if anyone knew how i could get it to work... ive done the easiest thing and plugged everything in and it says that it is connected but i cant access anything so something is not right....

can anyone help me please x x x

Are you talking about a mobile network for your internet connection?
Main reason for asking is you said you have canged your internet due to signal issues.

With a wireless router you will neeed to set the router up with the settings from the new provider, without these your pc and laptop will connect to the router but you will not be able to connect to the internet.

What network/internet provider have you switched to andwhat were you on to begin with.
Also what is the router you are trying to use? ASDL or cable etc?

More info needed if you want help
Provider?
Package?
modem models?
Operating system?

and make sure you set up security on your wireless router!

As previous poster said you are going to have to go into the options and settings of your old modem and change them (if they are compatible) to match your new service.

What your trying to do is technical and to accomplish it you are going to have to learn some new information. If you don't want to go down this route you do really need to stick to the hardware that is provided for you and then most things can be done with simple steps or wizards provided by them.
At the moment you are not able to link to the Thomson modem to adjust the settings. Until you can do this nothing will work.
A basic way to find out if communication is possible is to open up a command prompt window and then to type "ping 192.168.1.1" followed by return. You will get a report telling you if you received a reply. If you don't try the 192.168.1.254. If you do then you have a physical link to the device and it is just software settings that are the block.
If that fails type in "ipconfig" and see what your default gateway IP address is. try to ping this address or try to input this into your browser.

Actually you can try it with your present modem in first and see the results. It may help to compare when you try the box ii
Yes has to be connected to your computer via ethernet cable.
These are first steps. Let me know the results.

right.....

when i put in 192.168.1.1 nothing happens andd 192.168.1.254 i get my settings for the wired router
when i do ipconfig i get...
ip address for wired is 192.168.1.64 and shoes subnet mask and default gateway too

for wireless router....

cant get anything for either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254
when i do ipconfig comes up with autoconfiguration ip address 169.254.244.200 but no default gateway

I'm not sure why you changed your internet provider? you said you cahnged because of signal issues but the internet is through your landline so signal is not an issue. Unless you had a contract that tied in your mobile phone as well?

Just a thought (without checking) Could the old router be locked to O2? Some BT router models are actually locked so they will only work on BT and no other networks, there are some hacks to get around this but it may be a cause to what you are experiencing.

Ok so you cannot connect to the wireless modem.
Maybe try factory reset it as it may have settings from BT getting in the way.
Have a look at the manual and see if there is a way to reset it. I will have a think and look at it also.

hey i didnt really change providers... we had o2 in the old house that we lived in and then we moved but cancelled the o2 as they wouldnt provide us with anything as the signal was too low, so we therfore went with who our neighbours are with... am guessing it proberbly is locked to o2

sometimes there is a recessed button or combination that will do a hard reset without connection to a computer.

Hard reset using pencil / pen / clip.
unfortunately if BT have disabled this you won't be able to do it this way.
