help required - how to work out fuel economy on a citreon c8

hi guys. looking at purchasing a citreon c8 people carrier with 8 seats. most are 7 seats & diesels. the couple of 8 seater ones that i've looked at are petrol models. i'm trying to work out if a petrol model would be a viable option pricewise. they have an 80 litre tank. the petrol model gives 32 mpg & the diesel gives 39 mpg (so i've been told) fuel prices round here are 97.9 for diesel & 85.9 for petrol. i'm thinking with the 12p difference in fuel, it might not be too bad.

32mpg = 7.1mpl (85.9p) which means a cost of 12.09p per mile for petrol
39mpg = 8.6mpl (97.9p) which means a cost of 11.38p per mile for diesel

Also take into account petrol car should cost less to buy anr run but may cost more to insure. best thing would be to drive both as the fuel cost is so little you might not notic it but I would be cofident that a petrol one could do 32mpg unless your very light footed :-)

It depends how many miles and where you are going to drive - if lots of 'motorway miles' buy a diesel.

Also bear in mind that service of diesels is more expensive and do not look into statistics from manual, it does not have to be truth

How is servicing a diesel more expensive than servicing a petrol? If anything, diesels are cheaper than servicing a petrol because it doesn't require new spark plugs every year.

According to the people in the know you need to cover 40,000 miles before you start getting your money back at the present prices. Though that's based on diesels costing more to purchase brand new.

I'd say they are more expensive to service \ maintain too & if anything goes wrong with the diesel or needs replacing in the service or MOT it tends to cost you a hell of a lot more for the parts from my experiance.

mostly school runs. / local miles. odd motorway journey. i've had a petrol zafira & the timing belt snapped. cost me a new engine. traded in for a diesel zafira & the diesel pump went. cost me about £800. what ever u repair on a car isn't cheap now adays! i'm just struggling to find an decent 8 seater car to accomodate my family. most c8's are 7 seaters. the 8 seaters are very few & far between. i've seen an 05 reg at a local garage for £4,300. may be get it down to £4,000. they do say it's a buyers market at the moment. considering they are £20,000-£29,000 new the value sure has depreciated but it does bring it down to my price range. looking at keeping it a good 4-5 years. i'd be gutted if i'd paid £20,000 for it & 3 years down the line it's only worth £4,000. don't think it'll lose too much more now. maybe half what i pay for it in that time. i've a friend that runs a garage so it can be maintained / serviced regulary.

Why wasn't the belt replaced at its service interval?

the belt had been replace 20,000 miles before it snapped. just bad luck i think. x

I know one of my local garages does a 10,000 mile or 1yr (which ever is sooner) warranty on replaced parts so I'm guessing that is completely out of the question. oh well.
