Help required with laptop......very angry and frustrated

    Hi Guys
I do not know if this is the right section. But please help me. I have an Acer laptop which ws running windows XP and 7 RC, fine until few weeks ago. Xp started to crash and windows 7 would only boot in safe mode. I have checked RAM and HDD with various softwaes. I have formatted the windows XP and 7 partitions and restored to original factory settings with acer supplied CDs. I tried Vista as well. It will only boot in work in safe mode. It does boot in normal mode both in XP and Vista but hangs very quickly but never hangs in safe mode, can run for hous and hours. Now I have XP safe mode running I have falshed the IOS to a higher version (from Acer website).
I also installed UBUNTU but that wont boot at all would go to some screen and stops at most it has shown some Ubuntu boot icon as its boots, but never went furher then that.

Please give me suggestions how I can sort it out. I can format the whold drive but would loose the recovery partition. Any ideas guys.....

Your whole problem is that you've bought an ACER... Good luck with customer service (I didn' have with my two laptops)

Have you tried running unbuntu straight from Live DVD?

i've got similar problem a while ago (Vista 64 bit and Win 7 RC). I Check the system error log which says 'Error #xxx: Harddisk controller error'.

After some googling, the problem was fixed by updating the chipset's driver (spcifically the harddisk controller) from the motherboard's manufacturer website to suit the opertaing system.

I'd suggest to check first the system error log to see what causing the crash and do some google on the error number.

you dont have to lose the recover to format

you only format the data section, and leave the recovery bit

Do you Have a proper licensed OS disc with the legal code?
use that, install it, then you have to install drivers for your laptop, that might be the issue
get those latest ones now, from the manufacturers website, ones on disk might have an issue with windows which has updated since then
laptops have often dozens of device drivers you have to install after you have installed windows

What OS did it come with ?. What OS are you tring to run?.You do realise that windows 7 RC has expired ?.Are you using the same drivers for each OS or are you using the correct drivers ?.

Thanks for prompt replies. I am running XP at present, installed from recovery discs which came with the laptop. Yes I did try to run some linux live cd to check sytem before the format. OS came loaded I have not got the discs but do have the legal product key.
Could be something to do with MBR. Also how can I check the eror log, it doesnt crash anymore just hangs and nothing happens. I have to restart it.
    Thanks again

I had a similar problem which turned out to be a MBR Rootkit and I used RootRepeal to fix it. Had been anoying me for 2 days and so glad I found this.

Here is link to some thing that i found from Rootrepealer and may be interesting, it has found a file which is MBR.SYS and is invisble. When I try to check properties or delete it, nothing happens. Could this be the cause?
