    Help!! USB Device Not Recognized

    Hi

I backed up all my documents, music and films onto a 250gb Western Digital Passport External USB hard drive yesterday as I was upgrading my PC and needed to reinstall windows.

Everything backed up fine and I tried the hard drive on another computer and it worked fine. Re-installed windows and ive come to put my documents and files back on and when I plug the hard drive in to the computer, Vista (Home Premium x86) just pops up USB device not recognized!!

I know this problem is usually down to the drive not getting enough power but I have tried it in different rear USB sockets with the same outcome. I have also tried it in 3 different machines and they are all doing the same!!!

When I plug it in, it lights up and there is a click inside the hard drive then windows pops up with the message.

Please tell me it hasnt died! There is loads of very important files on it

If it has then is there and specialist companies who could attempt to recover files from it and is it expensive?

    Thanks for any help

I lost a lot of files using a 250 Gb WD Passport drive. I'm now on my third one, having returned two under warranty.
I no longer put anything I can't afford to lose onto it.
Data recovery is possible, but runs to hundreds of pounds. Google for hard drive data recovery for examples.
    Good luck with it...

were all the computers you tried it on Vista?

The usb cable you are using does it split into 2 usb connections or just the one?

What type of hard drive is it in the caddy?

I am having exactly the same ]problem. As I know the usb port is working (drivers ok) I have decided to take the drive out of the caddy and connect it direct to the computer. Not done it yet though so I can only hope it lets me get to my data.

donloaded a program called everest. last week. i did my bros computer and half the stuff wasn't showing up on the pc after reinstalling fresh xp. no usb for printer ...no ethernet. used this program and suddenly it showed everything and it started working. p.s. this was after days of trying to sort it!.

Have you opened the caddy to see what type of drive is inside at all. Cant seem to find the drive type on the site?

Have you since tried it again on another computer?

Everest will not be able to talk to the drive, while it is an Unknown USB device. For that you would have to crack the enclosure open and connect the drive directly (via another USB drive enclosure or a USB to SATA bridge).

are your rpc and cryptographic services running?

i messed about with some settings and had same problem

Yes ive tried it on numerous computers and its not working.

Im going to try cracking it open I think and get a new enclosure. Im obviously not going to be able to get a replacement from pc world if i do that.
Do you think pc world will give me a replacement and keep this one to attempt retrieving the files?

Nope. But they will offer you, at a charge, to move the data from the old drive to a replacement.

If you are careful when opening it, you should have no problem getting the drive replaced later.

Here is a video of some guy showing off how easy it is to open the case. Best tool for this kind of job is an old plastic credit/store card - anything stronger will damage the enclosure.]Link

After thinking I'd lost everything I'm quite happy now. PC World/Tech Guys customer service was excellent. I bought the HDD online but they exchanged it for a new one straight away in store. Then charged only £29.99 to transfer the data from the broken HDD to the new one. Just got it back now and everything is there

Think ill back everything up when I get home, not trusting this thing again lol!!
