Help wanted: I want a refund on my tv

    the story:

last august i purchased a 19" lcd tv (prestigio branded) with built in pvr, freeview etc for my bedroom. it cost £243.98 delivered from empire direct. all was well

3 months ago (approx.) the audio output goes wrong and i can't use my nice speakers any more, i have to use the crappy built in ones to get any sound. it came with a 2 year warranty so i tried to contact empiredirect, they have gone into administration. the name and website however have been bought by richer sounds. so i contacted them and they arranged for a local repair company to collect it and repair it. though it was the sound that i was calling about, there were also other problems ( a stuck pixel, regular freezing and the pvr sometimes forgot to record things) which i thought they might as well fix while they had it

a few days ago the tv finally comes back repaired. it works for a day or so, and now the screen won't display anything. i can sometimes get sound to come out but there's never any picture. this also applies for dvds/games consoles so it's not a problem with my aerial or anything.

i'm annoyed. i suspect my tv is just rubbish and would like a refund. i phone richer sounds who tell me they can't give me a refund because they only bought the website and the name, not the responsibilities, they advise me to phone the manufacturer but also give me the number for empire direct administrators. i phone empire direct admin and it's a pre-recorded message telling me they're in administration and then hangs up. so i try phoning prestigio who offer to repair it but can't give me a refund.

i'd really like the refund, i would accept richer sounds vouchers (might have more chance of getting that) because i will only have to buy a new tv anyway. i'm unsure about the repair option because it was so pointless last time and it took 3 months.

    any ideas?

    Then get one.

If you paid via credit card, they are liable now the company are in administration.

    That's a bargain!

I doubt you'll ever get a refund, but i believe that if its still under warenty and they can't repair it then they have to replace it with a tv to the same value or greater.

    p.s
dont quote me on that though :whistling:

Richer Sounds aren't liable so you'll have no joy there, as Chipivo says above. If you paid by CC you can clam off them, but they are the only other party you can go to. . .

it was a debit card...so the credit card protection isn't happening for me there unless i can use that chargeback scheme, but i know nothing about that. i will research it. thanks for the help

Some debit cards will help you, Barclays is one (I think).

oh and the price was high because it had a 160gb hdd built in on which it was capable of recording tv shows etc.

this is where i found out about it: hotukdeals.com/ite…n-/

but i missed a voucher date so i had to pay a bit extra

Have been having a look into this, see the thread below for information.

I think, if it is a Visa Debit Card (Which I think Barclays are) you have 120 days from the company going bust to get a claim in?????

Visa told us that all banks who are members of the scheme should comply with the rules. The members include Nationwide, Barclays, Halifax, and Lloyds TSB.

A bit of info is in the thread below re rights, and debit cards.

    Good luck.

I think Richer Sounds were pretty decent to try and repair it for you. They had zero obligation.

thanks for the link chiptivo, i think they went bust in january so i won't hold my breath

it's a manufacturer's warranty, richer sounds put me in contact with prestigio

manufacturer is under no obligation to refund unless you can prove it had a fault in the first 6 months I believe. Which this didnt.

Did you get any help from your card company re this???
