Agree with dcx_badass but if you have a blu ray player and watch movies then 100Hz makes sense.

I think it's a pointless gimmick and have a 50hz screen with no problems.

Thanks for the reply. But do the 100hz tvs not give an option to like switch it from 100hz to 50hz? wy would some1 need a 100hz tvif the signal is only sent out at 50? is it for like HD DVDs or something??

Thanks for the reply. now if i do have a 50hz tv and watch a BR DVD then would it look like an average dvd?

hmmm...me thinks i get you!! thanks..

With the brightness aspect, does it really mak adifferent if you have somehing like 90,000:1 compared to like 20,000:1?

Original Poster

dcx_badass;7376231

That's not the brightness it's the contrast between colours.

Oh, but does it make a big diffence? if i go for something like 20000: 1 is that like ok??

Hz won;t have any effect on picture quality whatsoever. Just that some fast moving scenes may have ghosting effect with 50Hz.

100 Hz.

Less ghosting/juttering/blur etc.

dcx_badass;7377155

But also get artifacts and corruptions or a un-natural picture sometimes.

I'd rather risk rare occurances than frequent headaches

100 Hz would produce a more consistent picture & less likely to notice flicker on the screen, especially if your are using fluorescent lighting or low energy bulbs. Fast moving frames would be smoother as the picture (frame) would be produced twice as much per second than a 50 Hz TV. If funds allow, go for 100 Hz.

But without good specifications, that comment would be useless.
It's like saying in an example between a Ferrari and a Fiat "Forget the numbers, let your feet and eyes decide"

Not at all, you would still test drive a Fiat or a Ferrari, before deciding on which suited.

Too much emphasis is placed upon " spec " that cannot even be relied upon from many TV makers.

You do 2 things with a TV, watch it and listen to it, let your own eyes and ears be the best judge of what suits you.;-)

A better comment would have been, "buy something that will be suitable for your needs",
as some TV's are more suited to certain tasks than others.
Like if the said person lives in a small house and requires a small TV

Thanks for the replies guys!! im after a tv thats about 40" n i like to watch alot of fast paced action films. Now obviously i dont want a tv that will leave a shadow behind all the scenes but iv asked my mates who watches alot of football and plays alot of games and he is using a 50hz tv. also not sure if this makes any difference but his Contrast Ratio is 15,000:1. so im thinking if i go got a tv thats 50hz and a contrast ratio of like 50000 : 1 do you guys think thatl be good enough??

Also, im lookin at spending around £450 for a tv and looking at gettin a samsung... any recommendations at all??

The higher the contrast ratio, the deeper the black, the more true and vibrant the colours are. If you will be watching fast moving pictures, worth getting 100 Hz.

If your budget extends to this > pcworld.co.uk/mar…als

Plasma will give a far better picture quality at 40", than any LCD.

Plasma's are more energy thirsty and are susceptible to burn-in
Plasma's are good for showing blacks, but LCD's are more crisp colours and are now the way to go.

In your opinion of course, I have yet to see any LCD TV that can come anywhere close to the picture quality of a decent quality Plasma TV at 40" and over.

Lets make it even simpler. TV is broadcast at 25FPS LOL. On 100hz it doesn't guess anything, it just refreshes each field twice per frame. But anyway, as LCD and Plasma have image buffers the frequency isn't as important as with CRT as they don't use alternating fields ie they're both progressive rather than interlaced.

How does that work, any good links? Btw 120 would be good for NTSC, the equivalent of PAL100. Although saying that i've not noticed any difference on NTSC using PAL60 so go figure.
