Ring up Microsoft, they will sort it out for you. I had a similar problem when I decided to use a legit key and it cocked things up. They sorted it in a few minutes.

youd prolly find the product key would be accepted anyways cause it would be registered to a oem copy i would image

try explainin to microsoft see if they will sort it, but they might not look so kindly on the fact youve used a false key to get that far lol

There are product key changers out there, just use google.

Highly doubt it will work though, you need to contact Microsoft as stated above.

i had this problem and miscrosoft sorted it Goodluck

Watch out for key changers 90% will have a virus

Did a few google searches and ]this seemed to pop up as a possible solution. Never tried it and I would recommend ringing MS first.

May I ask why you didn't just use your official key when setting up with your friends disc?

Not every genuine key will work with every CD of XP.

For example a genuine key for XP Home will not work with an XP Professional CD (and vice versa).

Or a key for the OEM version of XP will not work with the XP Retail CD (and vice versa).

There are also other types of XP disks such as for Enterprise customers or Developers, and you have to have the "right" key for the right type of CD for it to accept it.

I think you will find that no key will work for a different version. But you are correct that having a genuine key for say XP Pro, does not mean it is garranteed to unlock every XP Pro disc.

Or you could download xp awesome edition and use the p2p update and never contact microsoft again!

But as people said best to just contact microsoft and get a key change.

If you try to activate your copy of windows it will give you the option to change the product key, just follow the activation route without risking any dodgy scripts

in that case, make sure you borrow a disk which matches exactly (exact O/S is on the key label).

personally, I would ring MS as they will probably send you a replacement disk.

The sticker on the base of your laptop denotes this is an OEM version of XP.

For the key to work you must also install from a CD of the OEM version of XP.

You also need the same version of XP: Home or Professional.
