    help with a joystick

hi, i hope that i have posted this in a good place if not please let me know where i should have put it .
ok i really would like to get into some gaming and have recently brought new pc and just installed my new GFX card , purchased a lovely cordless joystick and thought brill here we go .
    BUT

i cant get the joystick to do anything in games other than pan left and right up and down , i have no trigger or button control, it must be something really easy to set up but after two days of trying i still cannot understand what i have to do , i really do not get all the techie terms so some plain english would be good .

i thought you just plugged it it and away ya went??

thinking i may as well give this up before i have started , which im quite upset about.:-(
can anyone help a gal try and game ?

    thanks x

Did it come with an installation disc? If not what make is it? It sounds like it doesn't have the correct drivers installed.

yes it came with a disk which i put on but it didnt connect , so i went to the logitech website and got the latest one for vista, it has connected since

and on the game controllers test it is working fine.
just in a game there is no button/trigger functions.

i think i maybe have to configure it somehow but i dont know how to do it , all the web searches i have done return very technical intructions with words i really dont understand!

it is the logitech freedom 2.4 joystick.

What game are you trying it on?

Often you'll have to go in options and configure for a joystick as most are set up for keyboard.

Also to configure the joystick. If you look in your taksbar in the bottom right hand corner there should be a logo for the joystick, right click and select properties or configure from the menu.

If the logo isn't there, try unplugging the joystick and plugging it back in again to see if it reappears.

well as im new i only have the copy from the net of half- life deathmach
and half-life coast to coast which were freebies with the graphics card software, from a place called steam ?

which i have to access through thier log in .

i can get on there and the only settings there are for each is to select joystick from to options menu .
on doing this i just get the main stick movement and nothing else

    the keyboard works fine tho.

ok i have to go out for a while now , will be back later to hopefully get this thing working or there seems an inevitable RMA to ebuyer comming on .lol

I'd say that the buttons need configuring in windows first. It's primarily a flight stick joystick i think so it may be a weird combination of buttons needed. Best bet is to find the joystick in the control panel and try configuring the buttons on there. Other than that i'm at a loss i'm afraid. :-(

ok im back, i have looked in the game controllers section and there is no setting for configuration.

i have searched every avenue and i am truly stumped .

can you suggest a good joystick for an alternative to this that a novice wont stuggle with ?

Yes, the 360 controllers require a usb port. You can use a ps2 controller with a converter but again you'd need a usb port.

If you've not got a usb port to use then look for a Microsoft Sidewinder pad with a parallel port connection.

You could get a pci card with 4 usb ports and then a usb gamepad.

why would i need to get a pci card with 4 ports when i have spare usb ports already ?

i just need a games controller which functions. im running vista BTW.

Sorry my bad I misread this bit :

does the xbox one work on usb ? as i dont have one.

I took it that you don't have a USB port, Instead you don't have an xbox 360 controller!, sorry!

First of all, Vista should not need any additional drivers as it should have them already installed.

Secondly, Logitech should work without any additional drivers being installed as most of their kit is Vista compatible.

Now that just leaves the game card and the game.

If you are sure the game card is ok, i think the game is causing problems. I am trying my MS G-Force tonight on FSX and hope it will work, I know I lose Aero when I start the game but it resorts back when I close the game.

Will let you know if I have any problems

im sure the card is ok , x1950pro
but as i have only two games as im a newbie gamer im really finding it hard to pick it all up.

then i find the joystick is a nightmare and has no button functions, and there seems to be no way to set them up (or none that i understand)

have noticed there is a suport number for logitech (not an 0870 for a change)
i will ring them monday see if they can advise me  .. unless i have accordingly chucked it out the window before then :giggle:

An Xbox1 controller would need an adapter or modding.

An Xbox 360 controller is USB straight out the box though, If you bought a wireless xbox 360 controller you'd a wireless USB adaptor.

Something like this is quite cheap though : play.com/Pro…pad

No I don't think so, I think you have to buy it separately.

You could get a Xbox 360 wired pad though!
