Help with a new car...something more economical!!

    Hi,

I am looking for a new car as at the moment i have a Ford Focus St170 which isn't the best on petrol!!
I a fair few miles so i am looking to get something more economical...So i am looking at a diesel car, something low on road tax and a bit of poke if possible!!
I have been looking at a Citroen C3 exclusive 1.6 HDI which is £13.5k brand new. I will prob get about £3.5k for my car and I have another £10k to spend.
I am just wondering what people think and if there are any other cars i should be looking at??

    Cheers

Must be loopy buying a brand new car

must be bonkers buyin a new car...get a 2yr old alfa or fiat bravo..dont spend anymore than £6k

Fabia vrs? Just over £13k atm with 20% off. Not a deisel now but way better mpg than your focus. The 1.4Tsi with DSG is supposed to be a peach.

will you be doing alot of motorway driving?

If it is motorway/a-roads at national limits then i'd suggest a something like a VW Passat 2005-2008REg 19.TDi
Bigger car, similar MPG to above suggestions i think given amazing engine that 1.9 is.
Bigger car with lower centre of gravity will feel alot more stable on those roads too imo.

In the week we drive into Town to work and takes about 30mins in traffic.....
We also do a fair bit of motorway driving as folks live about 150 miles away and go down about 1 a month......doesn't have to be a new car....just after something economical and with a bit of poke....

    Cheers

dont believe the manufactures mpg you can chop at leat 20 off whatever they say

I have a Citroen C3 Airdream + 1.6Hdi I am averaging about 70 MPG driving to and from work about 13 miles each way. I have not had any problems with it yet I have done about 5500 miles in the last 6 months and have enjoyed the driving. My son is now learning to drive in the car and he says it is much smoother and easier to drive than his instructors Corsa. Also road tax for this model is free as CO2 emissions are low.

We were looking at the Airdream because of no road tax and the good MPG....Started looking at the exclusive as think it has a bit more go and only £30 road tax....

the Sciocco looks nice but i have about £10k to spend and will get about £3.5k for mine so can't get anything over £13.5k..

i've got a 2005 VW Golf GT TDI 2.0. cost me 7k. I drive about 30 miles to work daily (mostly motorway) and usually get about 62 to 64 mpg.

Well if it doesn't have to be new its a no-brainer! An old model Fabia vRS. £6k for a really nice one, £250 for a remap to 170bhp and Bob's your uncle. 50+mpg + staggering (and I'm not exaggerating) mid-range performance that will leave you grinning from ear to ear.

    Show working out please

I chose the Airdream as it had better MPG free tax and I wanted the parking sensors.
It has plenty of go for me (90 BHP) but then I am not a racing driver.

Well after driving a few cars and being quite tall i think i am going for a Civic.....the 2.2 CDTI SI 2010 model, Bit more than i wanted to pay and bit less economical but nice inside and nippy :-)

I was going to say don't get the 1.6 HDi engine and expect it to last longer than about 65k miles, I was advised of this by the company I leased vans from at my last workplace and so chose different vans purely because of the engine. Apparently they just start having problems after that mileage, though of course some will no doubt run for ages will no problems.

Yeah, thanks for your input deek. It's not what I want but thanks anyway.

You know I don't know why I bother sometimes. I don't want grovelling thanks or anything, just a simple acknowledgement.
It's really just a simple case of manners.

Sorry didn't mean to be rude or offend you!

I do appreciate the comments.....a little late but i did have a look at the Faiba online but didn't get round all the garages and after driving the Civic went for that.

Again I apologize for not replying to your comment.

    Cheers

Given all the hype surrounding the Honda diesel engine I found it surprisingly poor, it's certainly fairly quiet and smooth but felt lacking when it was pushed and surprisingly thirsty for a diesel even when driven gently.
