Help with download speed problem please

    Hi,
I have 10mb internet service and have 3 computers running off a wireless router 2 are getting almost full speed but the newest one is not even getting 1mb, tried various things but nothings worked and its driving me crazy, it is connected via a belkin dongle.
Any ideas what the problem could be please?

Can you connect it with an ethernet cable and try again? Or try with a different wireless adapter.

(FYI - Your 10 meg line = 10 megabits, so equates to 1.25 megabytes download at most - likely to be less, so 1MB speed sounds good to me).

but he wrote 1mb (megabit), not 1MB (megabyte)

Best thing to do is try using an ethernet cable as suggested, and see how it works then. So you can eliminate the computer / router etc.

Well done speed tests and only this ones DL is so slow, so i took it downstairs so it was right by the router and it picked up the full 10mb so i think the signal is just too weak from my bedroom and need a better dongle.

What d/l speeds are you getting on the others?

As punctuation, spelling and grammar can often be lacking here, I decided to put my money on the user not being very clued up on what they were doing (no offence OP) and based upon their realisation, I think I was correct...

I must have missed the part about it running via wireless, otherwise I'd have suggested the obvious myself. Glad they sorted the mystery anyway.

Could someone advise what d/l speed one should expect with 10mb internet? I think my net is really slow.

Well to be honest it is not far from the router so dont understand why? The other pc i have upstairs about the same distance away picks up the full speed but for some reason this one wont, i am hoping a better dongle will help, fingers crossed.

At the absolute most, 1.25MB/s, however it depends on your distance from the exchange and a number of other factors. If you get about 600kb-1MB download per second, you're doing very well!

When we were on 10meg with BT, I think we capped around 400k-600k absolute tops.

On 20meg with O2, my line maxes at 1.6MB/s

Cheers Chris, am reaching around 1.1MB/s so not bad after all..think it might be worth upgrading soon.
