Help with linux needed, installing codecs.

HI folks need help installing video codecs on an acer aspire 1 notebook it uses the linpus operatering system. I know absolutley nothing about linux. I have been reading on forums and they tell me to add codecs with this command /usr/lib/codecs/. I dont even know how to access the command line prompt. Can those in the know inform me on how to access a command line. This would be a start. Cheers

You are probably better off reviewing aspireoneuser.com/forum/ than asking here.

Thats not a command it's just a directory, never used linpus but you can open a terminal by clicking “Files→My Documents” then “File→Terminal”.

Here;s a guide to enable a ubuntu like software installer where you can install your codecs.

/usr/lib/codecs/ isn't a command, it's probably the location that you need to copy the codes to. What media player does "linpus" use? I think Linpus is just a slightly modified out of date version of Fedora (Fedora 7 I think). Just install that latest version of vlc and it should sort out any codec problems you're having.

Not sure if vlc is in the fedora default repo but just try "sudo yum install vlc" (or if your users not in /etc/sudoers you may have to "su - root" and then just do "yum install vlc"). If yum doesn't work I think you can download the fedora binary from the vlc website and use yum to install it locally so it'll take care of any dependancies.

All of this sounds like mumbo jumbo. Its confusing cos I downloaded a few other players and didnt know how to install them. Its nothing like microsoft based programs where it installs it for you. So sud yum install vlc where do i type that?

In Linpus go to Files > My Documents to open the File Manager. Then go to File > Terminal.

nb. Linpus is based on fedora 8  (which is old and obsolete now, i'd suggest you install a proper linux distro, the new ubuntu (10.04 i think) looks good.

If you manage to find out where the terminal is type
    sudo yum install vlc

^^you need to be connected to the internet as that command automatically downloads the VLC installer and installs it.

As vlc comes with lots of codecs (VLC is a media player, not a codec - in case you were confused about that), hopefully you won't have to install anymore additional codecs.
