    help with networking

    Hi
    hope someone can help
I am running a wireless N router (belkin) but its not reaching throughout the house so intended to run an ethernet cable from one of the belkins outs to the kitchen and then use a us robotics wireless router to reach the rest of the house.

i've done this and it works but only briefly if i plug the ethernet (out end) into one of the the 4 outputs on the us robotics but in the end it drops out and seems to kill the internet at the belkin end.

Now in my head (theoretically) i should be using the following set up:

Virgin modem ethernet to input on Belkin N router

Belkin router out to various bits of networked kit out of ports 1- 3

Belkin router out to us robotics router our of port 4

ethernet (not crossover(should it be?) to US robotics Input port (as if it were a modem)

does the above make sense - it would electrically or sound wise but not sure about computer

    any help gratefully received

    thanks
    n

Turn nat off etc on all but 1 piece of equipment.

(saying that though I've a bad head at minute and struggling to follow) what's plugged in where :lol

Have you tried just using G on the Belkin without messing plugging stuff into stuff just use your modem and belkin eg. Changing channels and moving other equipment like microwave, house cordless phone , video sender.etc

Your logic sounds right, but I would have thought you want the wireless on the Robotics set as an AP (accesspoint) and configured in switch mode not router. Then connect the Robotics WAN port to one of the switch ports on the Belkin router

Switch off any other services on the Robotics (this normally happens automatically when you put it into switch mode) - ie no DHCP etc this should be done by the Belkin

The problem is that both routers will be trying to take the Gateway, 192.168.1.1. You need to set the Robotics to a different address.

each machine on the network must have its own address, these addresses are usually given out by a router or access point and this process is called dhcp.
if you put multiple routers or access points on a single network the other machines won't know which to get the address from and will fall over.
the solution is to make sure only one of these devices hands out addresses, this is probably best to leave to the device handling the internet connection, i have done the same using old bt home hubs to extend the wifi coverage on larger properties.

if u need any more help list the makes and models of all devices you plan to have on the network
