Is there any sign of life from your PC? Any beeping noises, lights on the keyboard etc?

Try swaping the power leads over between your PC and monitor and seeing what happens.

Could be your PSU or your Motherboard.

nope no life what so ever

how can i check which it is?

Is there still no life after swapping the power leads?

Original Poster

monitor has different connection so cant check

Open the PC case, being careful not to get any electric shocks, and then turn the PC on again. Most motherboards will have 1 or 2 LEDs on them that indicate if they are getting power to certain components. Have you got anything like this?

How confident are you at opening the case up and looking around inside ?

Are you sure? I've never seen a monitor that has anything other than a standard kettle type power lead in over 20 years.

I've seen some flat screen monitors with a separate power block, some of these have the figure 8 leads and not your normal kettle leads.

I exagerated a little, but you got to admit other connections are rare;-)

Pull the power out of the back of your pc. Open it up and remove all memory. Put the power lead back in and switch on. It should beep telling you that the memory is missing.

If you get no beeps its likely to be the PSU. If you get some beeps then usual culprits are the RAM and Graphics cards. Try installing just one RAM chip at a time and seeing what happens. Also make sure that the graphics card is properly located in its slot, take it out and refit it. If it is the PSU its worth spending a few quid to get a good one. Let us know how you get on.

i will do thanks for all the advice ill be back to this thread and doing it all tomorrow....my case is messed up anyway i ended up taking the button off and gotta put two wires together to power it up lol

As daft as it sounds, remove power lead from back of PC, press and hold power button in for around 30 secs (or in your case, hold the wires together for 30 secs), then put lead back in and try powering up...

hi guys, ok this morning i took my pc out and i took the graphix out and it powered up and did some beeping. then put it back in and its powering up ok. maybe i needed to just unplug the power and back in tho i didnt try that. or my graphix went loose, its a newish one tho so dont think its broke? BUT my hard drive is making horrible clicking noises. is my hard drive f'd??? sick of pcs lol

Sounds like your gfx card just needed to be reseated. As for the hdd clicking is not good. Maybe its on its way out or its just overheating.

hi again lol started the windows install again and half way thru i got the blue screen saying the install was stopped because maybe a new piece of hardware etc is faulty? im thinking about just getting a new one haha sick of it

It's your hard drive mate. Get a new one.

ive got 2 in my pc like but typically its the 120gb one thats naffed and the 30gb is ok.....guess ill be needing a new hdd eventually... think in the meantime ill take the hdd out and install windows on the 30gb, and add a new hdd later...

Good idea, that way if you find out later that it is still crashing, you've not wasted any money.

thanks for all ur help m8 and the other guys...

What make is the hard disk that is 'clicking'? Some have 5 year warranties so get the model number and serial number and goto the manufacturers website. You should be able to find the support site where you'll be able to enter the details of your drive and be told if its under warranty or not.

I recently had a PC that started crashing and the hard disk making a clicking noise. I downloaded some diagnostic software from the Seagate site and it could find no errors with my drive. Typical I thought.

Anyway the PC continued to crash ever more frequently, did some further investigation on the Web which persauded me to replace the data connector cables used to connect the hard disk to the motherboard, cost me £3. Best £3 I ever spent as the PC stopped crashing, the hard disk stopped clicking and I got to stop pulling my hair out. Try it out before you spend money on a new PC.

probelm now is ive instaslled windows xp pro with sp2 (on the 30gb) and realised i lost my product key for that one and only have the one for windows xp pro without the sp2...can i re-install the windows and put my key in etc? sick of this pc lark lol

its a maxtor diamondmax plus 9 120gb ata/133 hdd

I doubt its still in warranty but check the serial number on the website, always a chance (maxtors have 3yr warranty now but 1yr for a while before that). You can get a 160Gb Maxtor for £25 from Ebuyer but best value P-ATA drive is probably the 300Gb, 16MB Cache Seagate which you can get for £41.45 via google checkout and super-saver deliver. Guess you'd might want to get one quicker if its definately failing!
