2/1

Within the UK there are some regional variations in the signals, for example in the south odds of 6/4 are represented by the hand touching the opposite ear, giving the slang term "ear'ole", whereas the same odds are indicated in the north by the hand touching the opposite elbow ("half arm")

tom/tom mix - six pounds (£6), 20th century cockney rhyming slang, (Tom Mix = six). Tom Mix was a famous cowboy film star from 1910-1940. Tom Mix initially meant the number six (and also fix, as in difficult situation or state of affairs), and extended later in the 1900s to mean six pounds.

Half Arm = 6/4
tom mix = 6/1

It asks how much did he win.....and he won £115.
If you put £10 on a horse and it is a non runner and you get your £10 back....you did not win it!!!!

you are wrong i'm afraid when you stake your £10 you have paid for the chance of winning it back and more depending on the odds so when you give it to the bookie its no longer yours you can only WIN it back

you are now trying to prove your point and make your self look silly if you lose do you get your stake back then ? no the horse or whatever your betting on has to win for you to win your money back , if you put a pound in a fruit machine and win £100 should the machine say £99 no it says you have won £100

when you do the lottery and win £10 do you tell people that you got £9 no you say i won a tenner

please dont get me wrong i know exactly what your saying but go to the bookies later place a bet and you'll see it will show your return as winnings it wont show winnings and stake return as seperate things

Im afraid you are wrong. There is a difference between winnings and returns!!
If you bet £1000 at evens, you dont say I have just won £2000 do you???????
You have won £1000. It returns £2000 because you get(NOT WIN) your £1000 stake back

+1. Your stake is classed as a return, not part of your winnings

You then make a stake and if your selection wins you get … You then make a stake and if your selection wins you get your stake back + your winnings which are based on multiplying the odds and your stake.

I agree with nlambert - you get your winnings and your stake back. They are different things, even if your local betting shop lumps them as one payment. You collect your winnings and stake, and yes the quiz will show this to be the case - assuming the quizmaster knows what he/shes talking about.

the stake is not yours when you place your bet you can only win it back if what you bet on wins so yes your profit on that bet would be less the ammount staked but you are winning your stake back so for the purpose of the quiz the answer will be £125 and not £115 as suggested

If you bet on a horse at 4/1 you win £4 for every £1 you bet. So if you bet £10 you win £40. As you won the bet your stake is returned to you.

It's a £40 win with your stake returned, not a £50 win (or the odds would be 5/1)
