    Help with SKY HD please

    Hey guys

I've got a standard SKY set up that's best part of 15-20yrs old. I'm looking to upgrade to either SKY+ or SKYHD by buying an old box from a mate of mine.

Can I use a SKY cable splitter (the one's you can buy from ebay) that will make it two feeds and allow me to watch one programme and record another?

Or do I deffo need two cables coming into the room? (which will mean upgrading the box next to the sattelite)

    Thanks

You'll need a dual LNB on your dish as minimum (quad is standard now I think) you'll also need 2 feeds to your sky+ box.

why not ring up sky and say you want to cancel, i am sure they will give you a free box and maybe free installation.

thanks mate, guess that means looking into the costs of getting a guy out and seeing if I've got the dual LNB and feeding another line through

yeh I would do but its for my mother and she doesn't subscribe to Sky and uses it as basically a freesat setup and doesn't want to subscribe to Sky, I just thought this would be a quick option of giving her Sky+ option but guess not

Without sounding dense here, why can't splitting the cable in two count as 2 feeds? it's what has been done on my cable tv feed and that works fine

Because it will be the same signal being received by each feed. And im pretty sure you cant have sky+ unless you have an active sky sub.

Satellite works differently to cable, and as others have said, a Sky+ Receiver requires a subscription to Sky for the record function to operate.

cheers for that, oh well better to have found out now

i believe you can use the sky+ functions without subscribing to a sky tv package, for £10 a month. in effect you are having a freesat box and paying £10 a month for the ability to record two channels at a time and watch a third already recorded. whether thats something you want to pay or not is up to you.

    But the £10 a month is a " subscription ".

cough my mistake, probably cheaper to start up a subscription. If it's a Thomson HD box it will break very soon.
