    Help with Sony laptop please

i bought my laptop just over a year ago, around the start of april 2007. the warrenty supplied with it expired on april 4th 2008, around april 6th, the disc drive (dvd and cd reader/writer) stopped working. it was working fine, then it wouldn't burn a dvd, then it wouldn't read one, then the same with cds, this happened throughout the course of a day, for no apparent reason. there's no error message or anything, the drive just doesn't register that there's a disc in it.

i filed a case thing with sony on their website, and they gave me a couple of things to try:

    1. uninstall the drivers and restart the comuter twice (tried this, it didn't work)
    2. system restore back to before it broke (didn't work)
    3. completely wipe my computer and start again (haven't tried this yet, would like to avoid it completely
    4. send it in for repair. i asked if they would be nice and give me the extra days warrenty, they said no, and that it would probably cost £237.18 (which is a weird price) to have it repaired by sony. the laptop cost me £650, but was reduced to around £500 before being taken off play.com, i don't know much about hardware, but the disc drive is not half the value of the laptop, that's just silly.

so here are my questions to you delightful people:

    1. does anyone know how much places like novatech charge for this sort of repair, i'm going out this afternoon to ask around central london, but i thought it would be good to hear from people with past experience
    2. how much do laptop cd/dvd rewriter drives cost to buy and install? or, are they easy to install myself?
    3. alternatively, how much could i get for a sony laptop with a faulty disc drive (to be sold to some sort of tech wizard who can fix it and use it or sell it on for profit). it would come with software if they wanted it (or i could wipe it) but would include office 2007 ultimate, which is a pretty expensive piece of software

keeping my options open, what do you think?

thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to read this post, i know it's a little long...

A new drive is about £20-30 and it's usually just one screw, pop out the old drive and in with the new then exchange the bezel to make it all neat and tidy. Novatech won't touch it - I used to work there and they don't like non-Novatech OOW laptops...

My advice, do it yourself or get that techy friend to sort it for you...

ok novatech ruled out, are there compatibility issues with disc drives? i.e. would i have to buy a sony disc drive?

Nope - any drive will do - it's a pretty standard connection. Novatech will sell you the drive

You'll probably end up with a Sony (or Matshita) drive

cool, £20-£30 sounds a lot better than £237, i can't imagine why it's so expensive...

Because they don't want to bother with out of warranty repairs - too much hassle. It's the same with most big companies - Apple are one of the worst.

If you're local to Portsmouth and get stuck I don't mind giving you a hand. I'm sure there are people from all over the country on HUKD happy to make the same offer.

funnily enough i am local to portsmouth, i live near wickham. but i'm currently at university in london, thanks for the offer though. if it's as simple as undoing a screw and pulling out a drive i should be able to do it, if not, my mates dad is a hardware kinda guy, he set up our home network and supplied the hubs and stuff, so i'm sure he could lend a hand.

i shall begin searching for a good price disc drive. thanks for your help

Have you tried cleaning the drive ?

i haven't tried with a cleaning fluid, but i've wiped with with a cloth, i always thoguht the fluid was a gimmick, is that not the case...?
