you cant use the upgrade version without an existing valid windows AFAIK

pointless buying the more expensive full version if the upgrade version does the same thing as dcx suggests

hang on a sec i wasnt ignoring it it was just conflicting with what the other guy said, sorry, jesus i just didnt wont to waste my money, now its confirmed by 2 i thank you for your help much appreciated

You can use an upgrade disk to do a full clean install.

Once it has installed, you just need to do the following to activate it...

open regedit.exe with Start Menu Search and navigate to:

    HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE/

Change MediaBootInstall from "1" to "0".

Open the Start Menu again and type cmd to display a shortcut to the Command Line utility. Right-click this shortcut and choose "Run as administrator." Handle the UAC prompt.

In the command line window, type: slmgr /rearm

Then tap ENTER, close the command line window and reboot. When Windows 7 reboots, run the Activate Windows utility, type in your product key and activate windows
    .

We need to ban clueless people from posting, one you don't need any … We need to ban clueless people from posting, one you don't need any previous windows to use the upgrade using the instructions above, if you want to do it properly then you can still upgrade from basically any:

    hardly clueless

You are assuming the current XP is legitimate. I was going on the reverse assumption of a legal install otherwise why do people pay extra for a full install when you can legitimately install the upgrade without an existing valid OS?

although I must agree that I havent got a clue what basis robbieukrangers post is based on oO

OK so your telling me that anyone can upgrade there pc to windows 7 with only & upgrade disc
no matter what OS your running.

    Jog on

Fresh install may work but not upgrade

Why would windows put 2 products on the market
    1, upgrade disc
    2, full windows 7 disc

It makes on sense does it

I can hear the countdown theme going around in your head as we speak

    Clueless - I think not

Banning me for my opinion - priceless

& I see by the chart if you have XP they are all custom installs

    DO I WIN X)

    Also run windows upgrade advisor.
note, You cannot upgrade from 32bit to 64bit.

When i did my upgrade from vista to win7 it never asked me for my vista key (as it was already installed). Having said that yours is going to be a 'custom install' from XP so take advice from others on this.
There are ways to do a clean install from an upgrade disc (not legit) - research it on google if you want that.
They recommend using windows easy transfer.

    I knew it LOL

Actually a custom install doesn't wipe your hard drive but places your old installation into a folder called windows.old. To wipe your hard drive you would do a clean install
