    Help with wireless please

    Hi
My nephew has just moved into a shared student house which has " 20 meg broadband but a pretty basic "G" router ". His room is on the top floor (third) and he can't get hid PC connected. Do they need a better router or is there some cheaper soluton? There will be six of them in the house.

the best option would be to have the router on the middle floor for everyone to get the best average signal
also, has the router been security enabled? if so then the key will be needed to gain internet access

as previous replier and they either need a router that emits a more powerful signal or to install boosters.

    You Need A "n" Router

Alternatively it may be worth looking into powerline networking if the power system in the building will support it.

Having the router in the middle would be the best setup but if its not possible then consider an omni directional antenna to replace the routers antenna. If he is using a wifi card that has an external antenna then buy 2, put 1 on the router and 1 on his pc and he should be good.
It also depends on what the signal has to travel through, how many people are logging on at the same time.

This would be my plan of action - Move router to middle, New wireless N router, new wirless N wifi card for PC (If it isnt N already!) and 2x omni directional antenna with gain of around 15 - 25dbi.

Many thanks for all the suggestions..I have REPed you all. Would someone mind expanding a bit on the above. I have googled "powerline networking" and it seems to be plugs that you join the router and PC to...is that right? What are the issues about the "power system" that John mentions?

Just get an ethernet cable. £4 from eBuyer for a 15m cable. There's no cheaper, faster, more reliable, or more stable way of networking.

Powerline networking is where you basically carry the network over the power system of the building so you in the case you'd mention you'd plug one adapter beside the router and one in your nephew's room which he'd then plug his laptop in via a network cable (or could setup another wireless access point). The problem is that if the house has different power circuits (which is possible with the different floors) then it may not be possible for the two powerline adapters to connect.

Yep, That's right, The signal travels through the existing wiring, As all the wiring is usually all linked at some point the signal will usually be available at all the power outlets.

Only probs is if your electric runs on different circuits.

Pretty reliable, Your basically using your wiring as an Ethernet extension.

Thanks again for the explanations..more REP added. I gues the first thing to do is move the router and then take it from there...
