Help with xbox 360 codec updates

I recently obtained a modded xbox 360 from a friend.
When I try to play songs from my ipod or videos streamed from the computer or the ones stored on the HDD, I get a pop up saying that I need to download codecs via xbox live.

I don't have a membership so I can't. Is there anyway I can update the codecs without having to buy a whole years membership?
Also, I was just wondering if it would be safe to update via xbox live as it is a modded console, I wouldn't be playing the games online, just updating.

Thanks for any information

as soon as you go on live with it you and the console will be banned for life that's if the console hasn't already been banned.

You do not need a Gold subscription - Just an Xbox live silver account which is free.

It should download automatically - Although as LaoTzu points out, connecting to live with a chipped box runs the risk of your Xbox being banned from Live all together. Although it could already be banned if it's 2nd hand.

TBH - If you want the benefits XboxLive offers, you should be legit. :pirate:
