Define cheap.

[*]Travel outside peak times
[*]Try two single tickets instead of an open return
[*]Try going long or (if you have the balls) go short.

Going long is buying a ticket that covers the journey you want to do, but a bit more. You might find a better deal from Birmingham to Leeds for instance. Helps if the train goes the same way, through Wolverhampton and through Bradford, though.
Going short is buying a ticket that doesn't cover all of your journey.
Both of these are illegal apparently, so maybe not worth the risk.

go to Thetrainline.com and look for the advance tickets I went form birmingham to swansea for 7 quid onw way. Also crosscountry tains is a good one.

Wolverhampton to Manchester Piccadilly 16th May 0849-1000 £6.50
Manchester Piccadilly to Leeds 16th May 1042-1136 £5.00
Leeds to Bradford by any train £2.80
Bradford to Leeds by any train £2.80
Leeds to Manchester Piccadilly 22nd May 1640-1737 £6.00
Manchester Piccadilly to Wolverhampton 22nd May 2030-2227 (change at Crewe) £4.50

for a total of £27.60

A shorter wait at Manchester on the return journey is possible by leaving Leeds later but at an additional £2.50 for the Leeds to Manchester ticket.

A straight through ticket (travelling the same route & changes) would be £41.30 but you wouldn't be tied to one particular train as that is a standard off peak return.
