Does anyone know what Hermes couriers are supposed to do when the electronic machine used for signatures isn't working, are they supposed to get a signature the old fashioned way with pen and paper?

A delivery arrived for my partner a couple of days ago, the sender had paid extra for a signature but the courier claimed the machine wasn't working and just handed it over. She's not the best courier ever so I do wonder if she just couldn't be bothered.

If they have scanned it then when tracking the parcel it would give delivered status even if signature wasn't taken.

Seems to be a lot of these courier signature questions lately

There's nothing they can do. These poor drivers get paid about 30p per parcel and then have to deduct petrol and expenses plus tax and national insurance deductions from it.
Last thing they're thinking of is a signature if machine is bust
