Hi guys pretty serious question, anyone know much about the FAP gene?

Found 26th Jul 2010
My dad recently had a test and had the FAP gene which produces things called polyps (I think) which can develop into cancer. This means I have a 50% chance of inheriting this gene, so what exactly happens if I do have it because i'm getting quite worried. I'm booked into the doctors this thursday to have a blood test and to get the results can take 3-5 months. P.S I'm 18 years old.

Any help/advice appreciated

Too much information is dangerous to some people

I would speak to the Doctor on Thursday and ask for this thread to be spammed. Unfortunately this is not a place to discuss serious issues

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy for you!!! : )

I inherited a condition from my mum. 2 out of 5 kids have it. Never knew till I was diagnosed first then rest of family checked. I run the risk of liver tumours but get checked once every 2 years.

You learn to live with it. Don't worry that you won't take it all in if you do get told you have it. I found lots of support groups about run by fellow patients. They were good for answering questions and your doctor will be there to answer any questions you might think of. You're not expected to take it all in...it will take time.

Good luck x

Thankyou x, but tbh its not somehing i think about now , until i hear about people who are scared by the word 'cancer' so i just like to let people know its not all bad ! and it isnt xx

Thought this was a thread started by Numptyj at first!

Think you have had good advice here OP. Sometimes too much knowledge is a bad thing in cases like this - you read stuff and start to panic big time.

Btw - Shopstilldrops - very positive story there, you always come across as a very happy person on here, good on you x

Ask for a referral to your local Clinical Genetics Service, this is not something for your GP to handle, the CGS will offer full familial testing with counselling so you are aware of all the options/implications etc.

Personally, if there was a chance i had a gene that would give me cancer at some point in my life i wouldnt want to know.

OP my brother has these in his tummy, he's had no treatment as they are … OP my brother has these in his tummy, he's had no treatment as they are not cancerous yet, he lives in the states, his doctor just told him to get them checked every 2 years, 4 years later and hes still clear, neither of our parents had them and neither had the gene, so no idea where they came from.Hun dont read about it on the net it'll scare the hell out of you, just talk to your GP on Thursday, you can ask him anything and he will explain them all to you.Dont worry too much most people who have them live very normal active lives.lets us know how you get on hun.good luck

I can't help but read about it

I do a full contact combat sport which I really and honestly love doing, which I couldn't give up.

Thinking about it is really p!ssing me off now aswell

Yeah my dad said they will take a blood test on thursday and my blood will be sent off to some genetics departement and then you get results back 3-6 months after.

Well that's a bit silly really, if it turns out I do have it they can act early with it rather than it developing into something serious in time.

But then it won't be picked up early enough if you have regular tests/scanning!! Early detection means a better chance of treatment working and possibly a cure. Are you saying that if you were found to have advanced stages of cancer, that you wouldn't have wanted it to have been detected earlier? To allow you to continue all the sports you love and the romancing ( I was going to say womanising!!)?
