If you're going to put the maximum into your child's account every year and you won't be asking for it back then the ISA wrapper will save them tax in the long term.

20 years ago I got a bond with Scottish Friendly, which did very well for my daughter over fifteen years or so, until it matured. Other mutual societies also exist. These bonds can go down as well as up, as they are investments, so it may not suit you, but I was more than happy with hers. Profits are mainly reinvested for members' benefit.
