Ahhh, now you put it like that...

Translation for those who don't talk pleb:

"Because none of my social peers have tried this particular aperitif before, and furthermore, if I do purchase this car fuel I will only partake in a tipple. We will then retire to the drawing room for our port and cigars."

(English is still taught in our schools isn't it?)

Sounds like your planning on a night of bonking each other? Are you all that ugly that everybody has to be half dead to participate???!

People are getting confused between % alcohol by volume and Alcoholic Proof:

Alcoholic proof is a measure of how much alcohol (i.e.,ethanol) is … Alcoholic proof is a measure of how much alcohol (i.e.,ethanol) is contained in an alcoholic beverage. The measure is commonly used in the United States, where it is defined as twice the percentage of alcohol by volume

In the 18th century and until 1 January 1980, Britain defined alcohol content in terms of “proof spirit,” which was defined as the most dilute spirit that would sustain combustion of gunpowder. The term originated in the 18th century, when payments to British sailors included rations of rum. To ensure that the rum had not been watered down, the test or "proof" was by dousing gunpowder in it, then testing to see if the gunpowder would ignite. If it did not burn, the rum contained too much water and was considered to be “under proof.” A proven sample of rum was defined to be 100 degrees proof; this was later found to occur at 57.15% alcohol by volume, which is very close to a 4:7 ratio of alcohol to total amount of liquid. Thus, the definition amounted to declaring that (4÷7) × 175 = 100 degrees proof spirit. The 175 is not an arbitrary figure, it is (7÷4) × 100, and is the multiplier for which the lowest concentration of alcohol is 100 when a sample just meets a standardised gunpowder test. It should be noted that the term "rum" from the era of sailing was a generic term for many kinds of alcoholic beverages. Anything over 100 is "overproof".
From this it followed that pure, 100% alcohol had (7÷7) × 175 = 175 degrees proof spirit, and that 50% ABV had (3.5÷7) × 175 = 87.5 proof spirit, sometimes called degrees proof spirit. To convert percentage of alcohol by volume to proof spirit, multiply the percentage by 1.75.
In the United Kingdom the proof-to-ABV ratio is 7:4. In theUSA, it is 2:1.

HA HA made me chuckle , there s going to be some very poorly children at this party im thinking !

great party, everyone puking their guts up in the 1st ten minutes and phoning mum to come get them

Its probably more like they could easily risk 1 or 2 bottles of spirits and if they bought a crate of lager they would get more chance of being id's and it will be heavier and harder to hide from parents lol.

Smirnoff Blue is 50% ABV, so 87.5 deg proof US, so not far off what is sold in USA. As is the general consesus, you're being a pretty irresponsible and immature host to be setting out to deceive your guests. You could also be laying yourself open to charges if one of your guests did something and could prove you had 'spiked' their drinks, ie pretending they were weaker than they actually were.

As suggested Rum is your best bet 100% proof +

I got mine duty free and it's 50% (2L for £18!!!!!!!!), but looked in … I got mine duty free and it's 50% (2L for £18!!!!!!!!), but looked in Morrisons and Tesco and it's 45%.

I fly regularly from Gatwick to Jersey and as it's classed as outside the EU I stock up on duty-frees every time. Happy days!

Overproof rum is perhaps the worst thing for you to drink. But don't let that stop you and trying it out. This is a crazy drink! This is one of the strongest drinks in existence! Wild things are bound to happen after consumption, with one of the worst hangovers imaginable coming up the day after downing half a bottle or so...

Overproof rum is supposed to be pure alcohol before opening the bottle. Some stories tell of how the last drops of water are removed in the process of bottling. However, there's no doubting that alcohol is in abundance, and overproof rum will rank among the strongest alcoholic beverages you will ever drink. Being pretty tasteless as well, it's not at all that bad to drink. But the blast coming up after a sip or two or three is awesome. The overproof rum was probably not meant for man to experience...

Overproof rums are found in many other parts of the world as well. Why people elsewhere would like to drink it, is hard to imagine. In Jamaica, though, it has a very revealing nickname - 'poor man's friend'. Drinking overproof rum will be the absolutely cheapest way of getting plastered in Jamaica, since both beer and normal rums are a lot more expensive. The overproof rum therefore makes drinking a lot more affordable in a country where people have little or no money. Just pour out a good fill of overproof into a glass, add a couple of drops of water, coke or any other soft drink you may fancy, and you have a glass of real firewater! Overproof is also said to be a cure for various illnesses, including toothaches (although hardly a cure for headaches...).

In Jamaica, there are at least two types of overproof rum. The first is the Wray and Nephews white rum, the other is JB rum.

Wray and Nephews White rum is found everywhere in Jamaica, and is very cheap! Even on the airport the price for a big bottle isn't more than around 8 bucks (at the time of writing), and elsewhere it may be even cheaper. Wray and Nephews is a white rum, being a colourless liquid, and is widely drunk in Jamaica. It is said that people tend to age a lot quicker after drinking this steadily for some years, with hair turning white and skin getting wrinkled before time's due course. This is definitely not a drink for beginners!

The more elusive and even stronger overproof rum found in Jamaica, is JB rum, being short for John Crow Batty rum. John Crow is the name of the vultures seen flying around Jamaica, the meaning of the name signifies the taste of the JB rum. It's supposed to be similar to the smell of a John Crow's butt, in other words, its posterior. Getting your hands on a bottle of JB rum may (thankfully) be very difficult. It is supposed to be found around the time of the sugar harvest when the best and strongest rum is reckoned to be made. It is said to be a brown liquid and not white like Wray and Nephews overproof rum. You should consider yourself lucky if you find yourself a bottle of JB rum. Then again, you may not...

Have to agree with poster about Bacardi 151. Anything that comes with a flame proof gauze over the top has got to be good and tastes ok as well.
