Bought myself some guitar courses from the US (DVD format). The sender wrote a value of $99 and Educational materials on the parcel. I got hit by HMRC for £28.18. Breakdown as follow, Import tax £20.18, Clearance Fee £8.00. Do i have a chance to claim that back from HMRC at all?. TIA

Afraid not. For purchases (not gifts) import VAT and duty applies to goods over £15.

Costs would be VAT on the purchase&delivery price, plus the delivery agent's processing fee. gov.uk/goo…uty

Income tax, VAT, fuel tax, NI, custom tax etc etc. If you are happy to pay tax good for you, I am not and that's my opinion.

Not necessarily happy about it but it's a necessity isn't it? What would happen if nobody paid any tax of any kind?

who knows ??? try asking Amazon or Starbucks.

Neither Amazon or Starbucks are at fault. They are not doing anything illegal. The issues is that these loopholes exist. A business exists to make money, if they are answerable to shareholders even more so.

So you're an "honest working man" who doesn't want to pay tax. Well guess what, if you had asked the seller to lie and mis-declare the item, that would have made you less than honest.

Nobody "likes" taxation, but we are in a massive deficit financially because we aren't taxed enough as a country to cover our needs. Let me guess, you don't want the NHS cut further either? Then suck it up and pay the duty.

Edit: For the record, I had to pay VAT and Duty on a GIFT I received from the US because I sent it to my work address. I paid it because it was my own fault and learned my lesson.

Rather than make a definition up...

politically correct
adjective UK / abbreviation PC

Someone who is politically correct believes that language and actions that could be offensive to others, especially those relating to sex and race, should be avoided.

A politically correct word or expression is used instead of another one to avoid being offensive:
Some people think that "fireman" is a sexist term, and prefer the politically correct term "firefighter".

I gave a common usage definition not a dictionary one. If you want to play at being clever then carry on playing with yourself.

I really don't want a battle of wits with an unarmed person. go away please.

I got stung on import duty on a 30 year old amplifier that wasn't working. The fact that I already owned it and sent it to myself didn't seem to make any difference.

Instead of DVD, you could have asked for digital delivery i.e. use DVD Ripper and upload the video on some cloud? May be next time.

Stop talking to yourself then.

See, I can do cliched replies too.
