I know that if a trip is curtailed, you can claim some monies back. What if a trip is delayed? I was supposed to go on a holiday for 3 weeks as a group but the night before the flight one member of the group was hospitalised and we had to delay the whole trip for a week.

The return dates are the same so we have a shorter holiday.

Can I claim anything?

You entered into a contract. That contract has it's own specific Ts&Cs.

It was delayed because of your friend, not because of the air line.
So say your flight arrived late or set off late then you can claim.
Was it possible for the rest of/part of the group to have travelled as planned and the hospitalised person/remainder of the group to depart a week later?

Its a possible insurance claim - not a claim against the airline .
