I usually change a small amount at the post office and then use an atm and my debit card when away. i find the exchange rate much better that way.

I'm not sure if my card can be used abroad, I have an HSBC Maestro card?

comparetravelmoney.co.uk/ i use this site to find the best exchange rates.

Also most sites on quidco exclude foreign travel money :o(

I was wondering if I went to M&S through Quidco, would I get the amount tracked as a purchase?

It can, but it isn't cost effective.

Do you get a lower rate, when using your card abroad?

    * There is a handling fee of 1.5% (minimum £1.75) for withdrawing cash at Cirrus/Maestro cash machines overseas. Foreign exchange rates are shown on your statement against each transaction inclusive of an exchange rate adjustment, currently 2.75%.

have a read of that article, explains a few things about using cards abroad compared to cash

I'll still use my card thanks, on a business trip to India in November 2005 I exchanged £100 for Indian currency (so I obviously lost money there) as the company provided the transfers, meals, hotel etc I was left with £100 worth of indian currency on return.

I exchanged the money back and lost (if my memory serves me correctly) well over £10 (could have been close to £15) on the transfers. Obviously I lost on both exchanges.

Since then I take smaller amounts and withdraw as I need it. Of course if you plan to spend all of the cash you are taking then fine, of course you have to keep that cash safe as well. Sometimes it is worth the extra small charges knowing that your cash is safe.

Of course you still have to take care at an atm as you would in the uk.

I have a nationwide card and they don't charge
i've used it in Tunisia, Egypt, Ukraine and Holland and have had no charges.

At a price, to be honest HSBC are amongst the most expensive on card use abroad, Nationwide are the best.

gives an pretty good idea on the costs. However I go back to my preference on using debit cards, you lose cash on currency transfers and you have the hassle of carrying large amounts cash and all the disadvantages that go with that. If you can get a cheap debit card then fine, if like me you have to pay a small amount to have your cash safe and convenient then that's fine too. I have always received a much better rate on atm withdrawal than from currency exchanges and I travel a lot.
