ring your insurance that you have at the minute and tell them your leaving as you have found the above quote and they might beat it

I got a quote with them today...buildings and contents and the premium equated to £17.50 a month with £85 cashback through wepromiseto.co.uk.....try them!!

Lloyds TSB are also good through quidco, that's who I'm going with as they give £90 cashback. We've got a 4 bed detached house and the quote from them was around the £200 mark so your renewal quote does seem extremely high (unless you live in a 10 bed mansion of course)!!.

Might be wrong but if you get buildings and contents with quidco - its £70 not £30

I think you're right, had a look at Esure and they don't exactly make it clear but I would take it that a joint policy is buildings and contents.

did the same better policy than all the others and cheaper and £85 cash back - I did it on Friday and the cashback already appearing as validated in my quidco

take each out via seperate quidco insurers. My renewal was £180 for both (£30,000 contents, £240,000 buildings). After quidco I was £8 in profit for the year!

Remember to get buildings quotes on the rebuilding cost of your home, NOT its current value (normally much higher). Many people make this mistake and end up paying far too much. Conversely, some under-insure and coud be at risk of not receiving a full payout in the event of a claim.

Does under or over insurance matter?

If you are, say, 25% over-insured then premiums will be 25% greater than is required and, in the event of a claim, insurers will pay only up to the true reinstatement cost and not the sum insured. The additional premium for the over-insurance may total a large sum over the period of your ownership.

If you are, say, 25% under-insured you are at risk of a substantial loss.

In the event of a full loss the insurer will pay out 25% less than the true reinstatement cost ie the payment will be limited to the sum insured.

In the event of a partial loss ie a fire which destroys only the kitchen or a flood which damages only the ground floor, insurers will 'pro rata' a payment ie will pay only 75% of the cost of reinstatement.

    Buildings and contents.

Could the OP possibly have other items insured? I know that there are added premiums for accidental damage to pieces of furniture etc?
